Position Summary:

With minimal supervision, handles a wide variety of claims, initially focusing on Automobile and General Liability. Reviews reports from adjusters, lawyers and experts with the goal of determining coverage and assessing damages. Expeditious and economical settlements within prescribed authority limits achieved through arranging of and attendance at mediations/settlement meetings. Attends client and broker meetings along with other activities as required. Recognized as a technical expert and provides support and assistance with client management activities, as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and settle the loss to determine coverage and claim disposition.
  • Establish appropriate reserves for both indemnity and expense, and review on a regular basis to ensure adequacy. Make recommendations for reserves at appropriate level for claims outside of authority level.
  • Identify and communicate specific claim trends and account or policy issues to management, underwriting and risk services. Prepare comprehensive reports as required.
  • Pro-actively manage the case-resolution process. Actively participate in market meetings, mediations, and arbitrations as well as negotiation discussions within limit of settlement authority.
  • Manages the litigation process through the retention of counsel. Adheres to the litigation guidelines to include budget, bill review and payment.
  • Support claims marketing services by meeting with brokers, risk managers and reinsurers.
  • Prepare for and facilitate claim reviews with clients.
  • Provide oversight to claims being managed by Independent Adjusters to ensure Helmsman quality standards are maintained.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelors' and/or advanced degree/diploma (experience may be substituted for education).
  • 3-5+ years of related claims experience, including auto and/or general liability claims.
  • Experience with cargo and/or commercial transportation claims, such as long-haul trucking, is considered a strong asset.
  • Highly advanced knowledge of claims handling concepts, practices and techniques, to include but not limited to coverage issues, and product line knowledge.
  • Demonstrated superior verbal and written communications skills.
  • Proficiency in Punjabi is considered an asset.
  • Intermediate level of analytical, decision making and negotiation skills.
  • A valid Ontario Adjuster's License is considered a strong asset.
  • Candidates with a completed CIP (Chartered Insurance Professional) designation or those who are actively pursuing the CIP will be given preference.
  • Litigation experience is considered a strong asset.
  • Functional knowledge of law and insurance is considered an asset.
  • Approximate travel required 10-15%.

Target Hiring Range: CAD $90,000 – 105,000 per year (base salary).

This range represents the expected annual base salary for this role, however, offers above the published maximum may be approved with appropriate business authorization. Final offers will be determined based on each candidate’s qualifications, relevant experience, internal equity, and the needs of the role. The posted range does not include variable compensation (bonus), allowances, or benefits. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply.
