Course number and title: STA314H5F Introduction to Statistical Learning (emergency post)

Course description: Statistical methods for supervised and unsupervised learning from data: training error, test error and cross-validation; classification, regression, and logistic regression; principal components analysis; stochastic gradient descent; decision trees and random forests; k-means clustering and nearest neighbour methods. Computational tutorials will support the efficient application of these methods.

Estimated course enrolment: 120

Number of positions: 1 SIA

Size of appointment: 60 hrs

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2026 - December 31, 2026; Tutorials. Wed: 3:00-4:00 PM, 4:00-5:00 PM, 5:00-6:00 PM

Salary: $55.25/hour + 4% vacation pay

Minimum qualifications: Knowledge of probability models and statistical inference, sampling methods, R software

Preferred qualifications: Completion of the course and possibly other Stats courses with high grades, strong interpersonal and communication skills

Relevant criterion: Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.

Description of duties: Running tutorials, office hours, Piazza, marking, test/exam invigilation, support students projects
