The Ray and Stephanie Lane Computational Biology Department (CBD) at Carnegie Mellon University is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach to studying biological systems using computational methods. Faculty and researchers collaborate across fields such as computer science, biology, and statistics to tackle complex biological questions. Their work spans diverse areas including genomics, bioinformatics, systems biology, and computational neuroscience, driving innovation at the intersection of computation and life sciences.

CBD is seeking an Academic Coordinator to join the team! The Academic Coordinator plays a crucial role in supporting both faculty and students within a department, school, or college, focusing on a specific academic program. This role serves as the primary resource for students on matters related to policy, registration, curriculum, and available resources. Responsibilities include maintaining program materials, managing reports and databases, and coordinating with other college departments and central student service offices. For those supporting graduate programs, the academic coordinator also handles administrative tasks, marketing efforts, and provides information support throughout the graduate admissions process.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates advertising, fairs, faculty meetings, graduate milestone presentations, etc. Acts as a first line resource for prospective student inquiries.
  • Provides administrative support during admissions process by ensuring application is complete and organizing materials for faculty review and decision process.
  • Provides administrative assistance for faculty, students, and visitors such as but not limited to coordinating meetings logistics and resources, maintaining calendars, drafting correspondence, reports, and other documents for supervisor’s signature and/or approval.
  • Help organize and manage information and data with Excel and the Google suite of products.
  • Acts as a liaison or contact person with other university departments, i.e. Budget Office, Registrar, Property Management, Human Resources, etc., and with outside organizations. Assists in the research, preparation, and processing of information.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required. Associate’s Degree preferred.
  • 1-3 years of administrative support experience. Experience in higher education preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and Google products (Google Docs, Google Drive and others)
  • Strong interpersonal, organization, problem-solving and reasoning skills.
  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
