This is a highly responsible position in the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet. The employee is expected to perform all duties to the best of their ability, act in a responsible manner at all times, demonstrate leadership qualities, and treat all staff, youth, and persons with respect. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Supervises the preparation of food and provides general cooking in a Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) facility.
  • Prepares food and provides general cooking. Prepares menus, consults with nutritionist and other professional contacts.
  • Maintains records of amount of food served and number served.
  • Prepares all forms for federal school lunch program. Maintains records for government commodities received and used; provides forms to the Department of Agriculture.
  • Provides instructional kitchen skills to juveniles assigned to kitchen duties.
  • Ensures proper supervision of juveniles.
  • Prepares food requisitions and maintains food inventories. Maintains logs and inventory books on received or used foods and supplies. Maintains routine records for daily costs of meals.
  • Maintains and reports attendance on juveniles for federal programs. Ensures new food items are received, checked, dated and stored properly.
  • This position is deemed essential and has been designated for mandatory operations by the Appointing Authority; therefore, the incumbent is not eligible for Adverse Weather Leave.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Four years of sub professional or professional experience in a food service operation.

Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
