Department: Base Operations & Maintenance

Job Summary

This position will apply coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings and structures. The painter will be expected to use color theory principles to match shades, follow written and verbal instructions, and use a variety of tools to paint surfaces. Other responsibilities include completing minor repairs and selecting the correct paints and primers.

Duties/Responsibilities

Reading blueprints/instructions and examining surfaces to determine the kind and amount of work necessary

Making on-site preparations such as building scaffolding, covering fixtures, removing and reinstalling fixtures (e.g, doorknobs, electric switch covers) as necessary

Preparing walls and other surfaces for painting by scraping, using sandpaper, removing old paint or other needed preparations

Fill cracks and holes with appropriate material (e.g. plaster)

Mix paint and other materials to prepare the right color or texture

Paint surfaces according to instructions with various tools

Apply varnish and other finishes

Applying paint, stain, and other finishes to paint surfaces using paint brushes, rollers, or sprayers

Maintaining an inventory of supplies like sprayers, paint brushes, rollers, and tarps,

Cleaning machines, equipment, and work areas using water, solvents, and other cleaning aids

Reviewing and implementing work orders and assignments

Following safeguards, rules, and regulations

Required Skills/Abilities

Proficient written and oral communication skills according to skill requirements

Possess strong computer skills, able to read, write, and comprehend written instructional documents

Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume

Ability to apply concepts of introductory algebra and geometry

Ability to use various paint applicators such sprayers, rollers and brushes

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent

At least two years of related experience required

Knowledge of mixing, thinning and other methods for color matching and application

Physical Requirements

Prolonged period of standing, bending, reaching, and working with hands

Occasional periods of prolonged exposure to loud noises

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at times

Ability to stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands as necessary

Ability to hear and see to position and safety requirement levels

Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, and chemicals

Special Qualifications/Requirements

Must be able to successfully pass as required a federal, state, or local government's background investigation
