Position Overview
Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering (KIWE) is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead mechanical system design and third-party engineering coordination on hyperscale data center campuses (1GW+).
This role is ideal for a client-facing leader with both engineering and project management experience, capable of guiding projects from early schematic design through execution. You will serve as a key interface between Kiewit, clients, and external engineering partners—ensuring mechanical systems are designed, coordinated, and delivered to meet the scale, reliability, and performance demands of mission-critical infrastructure.
The focus of this role is on MEP systems, with heavy emphasis on:
- Chilled water systems
- Cooling plants and cooling water infrastructure
- HVAC systems and air-side design
- Large-scale piping systems
- Building Automation BMS and EPMS
You will play a critical role in shaping solutions for some of the most complex AI and hyperscale data center developments in North America, operating at gigawatt-scale capacity.

This role offers flexibility in location with a preference for candidates based in or near:
- Lenexa, KS
- Lone Tree, CO
- Dallas, TX
- Houston, TX
Candidates must be open to traveling to project sites across North America to support client engagement and project execution.
Responsibilities
- Serve as Engineering Manager for mechanical systems on hyperscale data center projects
- Lead coordination and oversight of third-party engineering firms delivering MEP designs
- Partner with clients during early schematic and concept design phases to develop solution-driven system approaches
- Manage and influence design for chilled water plants, cooling systems, HVAC, and piping infrastructure
- Ensure designs meet performance, reliability (N+1 / 2N), scalability, and constructability requirements
- Provide technical guidance and oversight to internal and external engineering teams
- Collaborate with project management, construction, and estimating teams to align design with execution strategy and cost targets
- Review designs, specifications, and submittals to ensure quality and compliance with project requirements
- Support vendor and equipment selection for major mechanical systems
- Communicate effectively with clients, stakeholders, and internal leadership teams
- Drive continuous improvement, innovation, and value
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or related discipline
- 10–15+ years of experience in engineering, design, or project delivery
- Minimum 3+ years of experience in data center or mission-critical projects
- Experience supporting hyperscale (100MW–1GW+) data center campuses strongly preferred
- Background in client-side, owner’s rep, or consulting engineering roles highly valued
Strong expertise in:
- Chilled water systems
- Cooling plants / cooling towers
- HVAC design and air-side systems
- Piping systems for large-scale facilities
- Building Automation BMS and EPMS
- Experience managing or coordinating third-party engineering firms and design teams
- Strong understanding of MEP systems in high-reliability environments
- Ability to influence design decisions during early project phases (schematic/design development)
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and communicate at all levels
- Strong commercial awareness and understanding of cost, constructability, and schedule impacts
- PE license is a plus

- Candidates may come from roles such as:
- Engineering Manager
- Project Engineer / Senior Project Engineer
- Project Manager (MEP / Mission Critical)
- Owner’s Representative (Data Center / Industrial)
- Experience with firms such as consulting A/E firms, design-build contractors, or client-side organizations is highly relevant.

Base Compensation: $120,000/yr - $160,000/yr
(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
