Overview

Johnson Controls is seeking an experienced Senior Regulatory Compliance Engineer to support European product compliance for Controls and Building Automation Systems products.

This role will lead and execute regulatory compliance and agency certification activities for European products. The role ensures products meet applicable safety standards, directives, regulations, and certification requirements throughout the product lifecycle, from concept and design through testing, production, launch, and sustaining support.

The Senior Regulatory Compliance Engineer will work closely with design engineering, product management, manufacturing, quality, and external certification bodies. The role will also coordinate with global regulatory peers when cross-regional standards, approvals, or product launches require alignment.

The primary focus of this role is the European portfolio, including EU and UKCA compliance requirements. Cross-regional support may be required when European product platforms are released globally or when global standards work impacts European products.

Key Responsibilities

Regulatory Intelligence

· Serve as the internal subject matter expert for European regulatory requirements and trends in product safety, product integrity, electromagnetic compatibility, radio equipment, hazardous substances, and related compliance areas.

· Lead product compliance planning, strategy, and execution for European new product development projects and sustaining engineering activities.

· Drive product lifecycle management for safety and regulatory compliance during the new product introduction process.

· Support design reviews, risk assessments, and hazard analysis by providing practical compliance guidance to engineering teams.

· Develop conformity assessment plans, processes, and procedures to support a harmonized compliance strategy for European products.

· Interpret and apply applicable EU directives, UKCA regulations, IEC, EN, ETSI, and related standards relevant to Johnson Controls products.

· Represent Johnson Controls, as appropriate, in European standards and technical committee activities, including CENELEC, ETSI, IEC, and ISO.

Compliance Management

· Own and manage the end-to-end agency certification process for European products, including compliance planning, documentation preparation, test coordination, issue resolution, and final approvals.

· Work with Notified Bodies and certification partners as required to obtain and maintain applicable European approvals and certificates.

· Maintain compliance documentation, including technical files, certificates, test reports, declarations, risk assessments, and supporting evidence required for EU and UKCA compliance.

· Coordinate with internal engineering, quality, manufacturing, and product teams to ensure compliance requirements are understood and built into product development deliverables.

· Support quality audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement activities related to regulatory compliance.

· Provide clear communication to project teams and leadership on compliance risks, timing, certification status, and required actions.

Regional Compliance Requirements

· Ensure compliance with European regulations and related normative consensus standards for Controls and Building Automation Systems products.

· Support EU directives and regulations including ATEX, EMC, Low Voltage, Machinery, Pressure Equipment, Radio Equipment, RoHS, and other applicable product requirements.

· Support UKCA requirements including electrical equipment, EMC, machinery, pressure equipment, radio equipment, RoHS, and other applicable UK regulatory requirements.

· Apply relevant IEC, EN, and ETSI standards, including EN 18031-1, EN 50491-5-x, EN 55022/32, EN 60730-x, EN 60335-x, EN 60079-x, EN 60947-x, EN 61000-x, EN 62311, EN 62368-1, EN 62479, EN 63000, ETSI EN 300 328, ETSI EN 301 489-x, and ETSI EN 301 908, as applicable to the product portfolio.

· Coordinate with global compliance peers when European products require international certification support through IEC standards and the IECEE CB Scheme.

Cross Functional Leadership

· Partner with engineering, product management, quality, manufacturing, supply chain, and regional business teams to ensure regulatory requirements are addressed early and effectively.

· Provide guidance to project teams on certification strategy, test planning, risk mitigation, documentation, and approval timing.

· Support factory, supplier, customer site, and test lab activities when regulatory compliance expertise is required.

· Help build a strong compliance network across EMEA, North America, and APAC to support consistent processes and global product launches.

Required Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree or university degree in Engineering or a related technical field.

· Demonstrated experience driving product safety and regulatory compliance activities.

· Minimum of 10 years of related industry experience, including at least 5 years in product safety, regulatory compliance, risk analysis, or agency certification.

· Strong understanding of European certification requirements and processes for building controls, HVAC, or related electronic control products.

· Strong working knowledge of IEC and EN safety, EMC, and radio standards and testing requirements.

· Proven ability to manage product compliance and certifications from concept through launch and sustaining support.

· Excellent project management, organization, communication, and documentation skills.

· Ability to troubleshoot and resolve compliance-related issues during product development, testing, certification, and manufacturing support.

· Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to influence cross-functional teams without direct authority.

· Ability to work independently while collaborating with global engineering and compliance teams.

· Ability to balance technical product understanding with regulatory compliance requirements.

· Working knowledge of English, written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

· Professional certification related to product safety or compliance, such as UL Certified Functional Safety Professional or equivalent.

· Experience with Building Automation Systems, HVAC controls, smart building products, or connected control devices.

· Familiarity with CE, UKCA, CB Scheme, and European Notified Body processes.

· Understanding of quality management systems, including ISO 9001, and integration of regulatory requirements into product development processes.

· Basic understanding of software and firmware considerations related to compliance, including software safety classifications and EMC implications.
