Cambridge College Lima is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced, and student-centred Secondary English Teacher to join our academic team. The successful candidate will teach English Language and Literature across Lower Secondary, IGCSE and the IB Diploma, working with bilingual students who study English at first language level. This is a role for a teacher who loves literature and is energised by helping able second language speakers reach the highest standards of written and spoken English.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create a stimulating and inclusive classroom environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, discussion, and independent learning.
- Use a variety of teaching strategies and resources to meet the different learning needs and abilities of students.
- Assess, monitor, and track student progress, providing constructive and timely feedback to support continued development.
- Use assessment data effectively to inform teaching and implement appropriate interventions when required.
- Maintain high expectations for student achievement, behaviour, participation, and engagement.
- Build positive and professional relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Contribute actively to the wider life of the school, including extracurricular activities, school events, trips, and other initiatives.
- Maintain accurate academic records and complete reports and other documentation in line with school requirements.
- Promote the school’s values and contribute to a positive, collaborative, and internationally minded school culture.
- Ensure the safeguarding, wellbeing, and pastoral care of students in accordance with school policies and procedures.
- Plan and deliver engaging, well-structured English lessons across Cambridge Lower Secondary, IGCSE and IB Diploma courses, aligned with the school's curriculum and academic expectations.
- Support students in developing strong reading comprehension, written composition, textual analysis and oral communication skills, with deliberate attention to the vocabulary and idiom demands that first language assessment places on bilingual learners.
- Prepare, mark and moderate coursework and internal assessment, including IB Individual Orals, in line with examination board requirements.
- Collaborate with colleagues to support curriculum planning and the continuous development of the English programme.
- Contribute to enrichment beyond the classroom, such as debate, public speaking, Model United Nations, creative writing and the school production.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
- A recognised teaching qualification or certification.
- Strong subject knowledge and the ability to deliver engaging and academically rigorous lessons.
- Strong classroom management skills and the ability to create an inclusive and positive learning environment.
- A student-centred approach with a genuine commitment to supporting both academic achievement and personal development.
- Excellent communication, organisation, and collaboration skills.
- The ability to use technology effectively to enhance teaching and learning.
- A proactive, flexible, and collaborative approach to working within an international school community.
- A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of children and young people.
- A Bachelor's degree in English, English Literature, Education, or another relevant field, together with a recognised teaching qualification such as QTS or a PGCE.
- Previous experience teaching English at Secondary level, ideally within an international or bilingual school environment.
- Experience delivering Cambridge Lower Secondary English, CIE IGCSE First/Second Language English and/or Literature in English, and/or IBDP English A: Language and Literature or English B. IB workshop training is an advantage, and training can be provided for the right candidate.
- A practical understanding of how to stretch second language speakers towards first language grades.
- Native or near-native fluency in English. Spanish is welcome but not required.
