Senior C# Software Engineer – Semiconductor Metrology
About this role
Senior C# Software Engineer – Semiconductor Metrology
£58,000 – £65,000 + EMI Share Options + Private Healthcare + Pension
Are you an experienced C# Software Engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering problems where software directly controls real-world hardware?
We're looking for a Senior C# Software Engineer to help develop the next generation of semiconductor metrology and inspection systems. You'll work on software that controls high-precision motion systems, sensors, data acquisition platforms and advanced measurement technology used by leading semiconductor manufacturers worldwide.
This is a technical leadership role where you'll influence software architecture, mentor developers, and work closely with engineers and scientists developing technology operating at the leading edge of semiconductor innovation.
We're adopting agentic development with Claude, but our engineers retain full ownership and accountability of the code they ship - whether they wrote it or generated it. AI is a tool that amplifies engineering expertise, not a substitute for it
What you'll be doing
- Designing, developing, and maintaining software for AFM-based semiconductor inspection systems using C# and .NET technologies.
- Implementing real-time control for AFM scanning, nanometer-level positioning, and feedback loops.
- Developing HMI (Human-Machine Interface) applications for operator dashboards and inspection workflows.
- Integrating software with motion controllers, piezo actuators, and high-resolution sensors.
- Optimizing system performance for high-precision scanning, image processing, and data analysis.
- Ensuring compliance with cleanroom standards, safety protocols, and semiconductor industry certifications.
- Collaborating with hardware, optics, and applications teams to deliver integrated solutions.
- Conducting rigorous testing and validation to meet ISO, IEC, and semiconductor inspection standards.
- Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to architectural decisions for scalable and maintainable systems.
Essential experience
- 5+ years of experience in software development with strong proficiency in C#, WPF, .NET, and Windows-based applications.
- Solid understanding of industrial automation, motion control, and real-time systems.
- Experience of IPC technologies and techniques (e.g. DDS, MQTT, ZeroMQ, RabbitMQ, NamedPipes, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of object-oriented design, design patterns, and SOLID principles.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced semiconductor environment.
Nice to have
- Experience with semiconductor inspection tools, metrology systems, and image analysis algorithms.
- Knowledge of SCADA systems, HMI development, and industrial IoT.
- Knowledge of Python, C++, and other languages.
- Networking and Network Topology (TCP/IP, routing etc.).
- Experience with AI-assisted software development (preferably Claude Code) in a professional setting highly desirable.
- Understanding of cleanroom protocols and safety standards (e.g., IEC 61508).
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
Qualifications
- Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Why join Infinitesima?
Infinitesima develops advanced Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) technology that enables the next generation of semiconductor devices.
Our systems combine precision engineering, advanced physics, software and data science to solve measurement challenges at nanometre scale. As we continue to scale internationally, software plays a critical role in how our systems perform, communicate and deliver value to customers.
You'll join a highly skilled team of engineers and scientists building technology used to support some of the world's most advanced semiconductor manufacturing environments.
This is a genuinely rare opportunity to combine C# software engineering, technical leadership and cutting-edge hardware development in one role.
Our strength lies in the varied perspectives that come from different cultures, experiences, and identities. We believe that true innovation is fuelled by collaboration, locally and globally. We strive to foster an environment where everyone can contribute meaningfully and thrive. Company at a glance
Infinitesima was spun out of the University of Bristol in 2001 and has been developing innovative metrology solutions which improve speed and precision in the manufacture of semiconductors. The company’s technology combines the 3-dimensional surface detection capability of atomic force microscopy (AFM), with high-speed laser activation and the accuracy of interferometry. The Rapid Probe Microscope (RPM™) is protected by an extensive patent portfolio. The company’s RPM™ technology is being used by leading semiconductor equipment companies globally. Semiconductor devices provide the foundations on which progress in the technology sector are enabled. From Smartphones to Artificial Intelligence, 5G communications to autonomous vehicles, all are made possible through advances in semiconductor processes. Scaling these processes requires sub-nanometer measurement of increasingly complex 3D structures to enable more powerful devices.
Based in Abingdon, UK, we are a high calibre team of 80 people and continue to grow. We are backed by global financial and industry investors including Applied Ventures, the strategic venture arm of the industry leading equipment company.
