This is a hybrid role based in our New York City office
About Independence American Insurance Company
Independence American Insurance Company (IAIC) is a rapidly growing insurance carrier within Independence Pet Holdings (IPH), one of the most dynamic platforms in the pet health and insurance industry. IPH operates a broad portfolio of pet health brands and services across North America, supported by an integrated platform that includes its own insurance carrier, insurance brands, and partner brands.
We are at an exciting stage where foundational decisions matter. Our teams are designing processes, implementing technology, strengthening controls, and creating the infrastructure needed to support the next phase of growth. This environment offers the best of both worlds: the stability of an established insurance platform combined with the energy, visibility, and opportunity typically found in a high-growth startup.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to provide hands-on accounting leadership within IAIC. This role will oversee critical accounting operations and reporting activities across accounts payable, intercompany transactions, investments, banking, reconciliations, and statutory reporting while helping strengthen the processes and controls that support the carrier.
The Accounting Manager will lead and develop a high-performing team, serve as a key partner across Finance and the broader organization, and drive process improvement, automation, and systems initiatives. This is an ideal opportunity for an accounting leader who combines strong technical and operational accounting expertise with a continuous-improvement mindset and enjoys building scalable processes in a dynamic insurance environment.
The role's operational scope includes AP, intercompany, investment and banking workflows, system optimization, cross-functional partnership, team leadership, and reporting transformation.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations & Close — Oversee day-to-day accounting workflows across accounts payable, intercompany transactions, investments, banking, reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, and related close activities.
Review & Financial Controls — Serve as a hands-on reviewer and approver for AP transactions, intercompany files, investment journal entries, reconciliations, statutory schedules, and other key accounting deliverables.
Statutory & Management Reporting — Support accurate and timely statutory, Canadian Branch, management, and other financial reporting requirements, ensuring appropriate processes, controls, and review standards are maintained.
Team Leadership & Development — Lead, develop, and scale a high-performing accounting and reporting team by establishing clear expectations, strengthening technical capabilities, and fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Process Improvement & Transformation — Lead initiatives to improve accuracy, efficiency, transparency, and scalability across accounting and reporting processes, including AP and shared-services relationships.
Systems & Automation — Maximize the effectiveness of D365, Concur, banking platforms, and other finance systems; identify opportunities for automation and lead finance participation in testing, UAT, implementation, and post-implementation stabilization.
Cross-Functional Partnership — Partner closely with FP&A, Procurement, Payroll, Investments, Treasury, Technology, Operations, and other stakeholders to ensure accounting, regulatory reporting, and control requirements are incorporated into business processes and technology solutions.
Controls & Operating Model — Build and continuously improve control environments, reporting calendars, review processes, metrics, timelines, and operating models that support regulatory deliverables and a scalable accounting organization.
Technology & Data Integration — Represent Finance and Accounting in system implementations, reporting platform enhancements, data architecture decisions, and integrations, translating accounting and regulatory requirements into effective technology and control solutions.
Audit Support — Coordinate with external auditors on accounting, AP, investment, and related audit requests and ensure timely, accurate supporting documentation.
Planning & Special Projects — Participate in departmental budgeting and goal setting and support strategic finance initiatives, including banking and general ledger system implementations and enhancements.
Change Leadership — Help lead the organization through evolving processes, systems, and reporting requirements using strong problem-solving skills and a practical, solutions-oriented approach.
