IMEG is hiring an Electrical Project Engineer in Urbandale, IA to lead design efforts for low to moderate complexity projects and collaborate with senior staff on larger and more complex work. This role focuses on the analysis, design, and implementation oversight of electrical systems for buildings while providing practical engineering solutions and advice to clients.
You will help manage project budgets and progress, mentor less experienced staff, and work with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations through design, bidding, and construction administration. Supporting commercial and institutional projects, this role also contributes to high-performance, energy-efficient design aligned with MEP2050 and AIA2030.

What You'll Do
• Lead design efforts for low to moderate complexity electrical projects, serving as project manager or lead engineer as assigned.
• Analyze electrical systems and develop designs, specifications, and calculations using engineering software and tools in accordance with code requirements and IMEG standards.
• Partner with clients to understand project needs, gather requirements, communicate technical information, and build strong working relationships.
• Support project execution with planning, budgeting, and scheduling to meet deadlines, objectives, and client expectations.
• Document client instructions and design decisions, and monitor project progress against percent complete and fee expended.
• Analyze engineering problems and develop practical, efficient solutions in collaboration with senior engineers and consultants.
• Perform in-process reviews of electrical designs, calculations, and specifications, and apply IMEG quality control processes to meet firm, industry, and client standards.
• Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices, and contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts within IMEG.
• Prioritize safety in all aspects of engineering work by identifying and mitigating potential risks associated with electrical systems.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated solutions, identify potential project issues, seek guidance from the Project Manager, and support projects through bidding and construction administration.
What You'll Bring
Required Education
• Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent required
• Professional Engineer (PE) License required
Experience
• 2 years of experience minimum required, 4 preferred, in the building design consulting industry
Required Skills/Abilities
• Proficiency in design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications
• Strong technical and analytical skills including knowledge of principles relating to circuit theory, electromagnetism, power systems, and electronics as they relate to electrical systems design for buildings
• Proficient with industry standard engineering software and tools including lighting photometric calculation software such as AGI, Elum Tools, Visual Lighting, or other; power system analysis and design software such as SKM/PTW, Easy Power, or other; and energy compliance software such as ComCheck. Proficient with Adobe or Bluebeam Revu
• Knowledge of Illumination Engineering Society (IES) Standards
• Proficient with the use of reference material resources such as NFPA Link, TechStreet, MadCAD, and Facility Guideline Institution (FGI)
• Knowledge of Master Specification editing and software such as eSPECS, Building Information Model software, and CTC Revit Add In Tools; Proficiency of Smart Engineering Design Assist (SET) Tools within Revit for electrical calculations, coordination, properties, etc.
• Ability to train and mentor less experienced staff
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
• Proficient with MS Office Suite including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Ability to travel up to 10% with occasional overnight stays
About the Team
• Work is heavily higher-education focused, with recurring mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, technology, and energy-modeling scope on classrooms, science buildings, student housing, and health-science projects. That pattern suggests a strong full-service MEP team with especially solid experience in lab, campus, and complex student-facility coordination.
• A notable additional signal is the health-sciences and research tilt, including geothermal and all-electric work and lab-intensive projects at Des Moines University and Drake University.
• Recent work includes BASF / Malcolm / New Service, Industrial; The Marshalltown Company / Marshalltown, IA / Mezzanine buildout, Industrial; and Wells Fargo / Hoffman Estates, IL / Alarm Redesign, Commercial.
