The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing respiratory care services to residents in a health and rehabilitation setting. This role assesses, treats, and monitors residents with cardiopulmonary and respiratory conditions while collaborating with physicians, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure quality resident-centered care. The Respiratory Therapist supports clinical outcomes through respiratory education, treatments, compliance with healthcare regulations, and proactive resident monitoring.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Resident Care & Respiratory Services

Educate residents, families, and staff regarding respiratory care procedures and equipment use
Assess residents’ respiratory status and review physician orders for respiratory care needs
Administer respiratory therapy treatments including oxygen therapy, aerosol treatments, nebulizer treatments, suctioning, and airway management
Monitor residents receiving respiratory support and report changes in condition promptly
Assist with pulmonary rehabilitation and breathing treatment plans

Clinical Documentation & Compliance

Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with facility policies and regulatory requirements
Ensure compliance with physician orders, infection control standards, and respiratory care protocols
Participate in care planning and interdisciplinary team meetings as needed
Maintain confidentiality of resident information in accordance with HIPAA regulations
Maintain all education documentation provided to staff

Equipment & Safety

Inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment
Ensure oxygen storage and respiratory equipment are maintained safely and according to regulations
Follow all safety procedures and emergency response protocols related to respiratory services

Collaboration & Communication

Work collaboratively with nursing staff, physicians, rehabilitation teams, and other healthcare professionals
Communicate resident status updates and respiratory concerns effectively
Support staff education and training related to respiratory care services

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of respiratory therapy practices, procedures, and equipment
Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills
Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations
Strong organizational and documentation abilities

Qualifications

Current Respiratory Therapist license/certification in the applicable state
Current CPR/BLS certification required
Previous experience in long-term care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, or healthcare setting preferred
