Software Engineering Manager
About this role
We are seeking an experienced Software Engineering Manager (Tech Lead) to join our Auckland-based engineering team. This is a genuinely hybrid role, with approximately 50% of your time focused on hands-on technical delivery and 50% focused on leading your squad. Unlike a pure management role, you will remain a practising engineer, building and reviewing code, shaping architecture, and setting the technical bar for your team.
IDEXX continues to make significant strategic investment in Veterinary Software, with a clear ambition to deliver the first fully integrated vertical SaaS platform for Animal Health. Auckland is home to IDEXX’s global Software Centre of Excellence, where we design, build, and operate cloud-native platforms and applications that support veterinary professionals worldwide.
Why this role matters
As our platforms continue to scale globally, we are growing a world-class engineering team where technical excellence and people leadership go hand in hand. In this role, you will lead a cross-functional squad responsible for delivering meaningful outcomes for veterinary professionals while contributing directly to the design, development, and operation of our software. Working across modern technologies and cloud-native architectures, you will help shape both the technical direction of our products and the growth of the engineers who build them, supporting IDEXX’s mission to solve veterinary practices’ most pressing challenges through technology.
In this role
You embrace and champion agentic coding and AI-assisted development as core elements of how we build software, helping reimagine the software development lifecycle from design and specification through verification and operation.
You lead from the front by actively delivering features, writing code, and maintaining high standards of automated test coverage alongside your team.
You create technical architecture and design documentation for complex, large-scale systems that are secure, scalable, and maintainable.
You conduct senior code reviews that raise the quality bar across the squad and ensure robust, maintainable code reaches production.
You support architectural and engineering excellence across the squad, contributing to technology discussions and helping drive the platform forward.
You mentor and develop a cross-functional squad of engineers through coaching, feedback, and hands-on support.
You foster an inclusive and psychologically safe environment where individuals contribute openly, collaborate effectively, and perform at their best.
You establish clear performance objectives and development plans for squad members, tracking progress and supporting ongoing growth conversations.
You help attract, recruit, and retain high-performing engineers whose values, mindset, and technical capabilities align with IDEXX’s needs.
You inspire a culture of accountability and end-to-end ownership, ensuring the squad understands and is motivated by the value of what they are building.
You collaborate closely with Engineering leadership, Product Managers, and Architects to align squad priorities with the product roadmap and broader technical strategy.
You optimize squad processes to support efficient delivery, minimize work in progress, and maintain clear stakeholder expectations.
You champion engineering process improvement and contribute to the evolution of IDEXX’s engineering values, practices, and standards across teams.
