Purpose of the Role

The Design Engineer plays a critical role in the development and delivery of high-quality temporary / permanent point-of-sale (POS) solutions, translating creative concepts into engineered, manufacturable realities.

This is a hands-on technical role that bridges design intent with engineering precision. Working closely with Concept Designers (inhouse or agency), Account Managers, Production teams, and external suppliers, the Design Engineer ensures that all outputs are structurally sound, commercially viable, and executable at scale.

In addition to technical delivery, the role provides guidance, expertise, and mentorship within the engineering team, helping to elevate standards, improve processes, and drive innovation.

To lead the engineering development of permanent POS solutions, ensuring all designs are innovative, manufacturable, and delivered to the highest standards of quality, performance, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Technical Delivery

  • Lead the engineering development of temporary / permanent solutions from concept through to production.
  • Translate creative concepts into engineered solutions using wood, metal, plastics, incorporating lighting, electrical, and digital solutions.
  • Produce high-quality 3D CAD models, technical drawings, and fabrication-ready documentation.
  • Own the creation and accuracy of BOMs, tech packs, and engineering specifications.

Design Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Concept Designers and / or external agencies to ensure ideas are feasible, structurally robust, and production ready.
  • Provide proactive technical input during concept development, identifying opportunities and constraints early.
  • Maintain alignment between creative ambition and engineering execution.

Materials & Manufacturing Expertise

  • Specify appropriate materials, finishes, and construction techniques to meet performance, brand, and cost requirements.
  • Apply deep knowledge of manufacturing processes across multiple materials and regions.
  • Ensure all solutions are optimised for DFM (Design for Manufacture) and cost-effective production.
  • Promote sustainable design thinking and responsible material usage across projects.

Supplier & Production Interface

  • Work directly with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure clarity of design intent and feasibility.
  • Review prototypes, samples, and production builds, resolving technical challenges as they arise.
  • Support production teams in troubleshooting and refining designs through to final delivery.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Provide technical expertise in client meetings, presentations, and internal reviews.
  • Clearly communicate technical solutions and rationale to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Account Management, Production, and Supply Chain teams.
  • Compliance, Quality & Lifecycle Thinking.
  • Ensure all designs meet health & safety standards, structural requirements, and brand guidelines.
  • Consider logistics, installation, durability, and lifecycle performance as integral to every solution.
  • Drive consistency and quality across all engineering outputs.

 

Knowledge, Skills + Experience

  • Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of materials, fixings, finishes, and structural design principles.
  • Deep understanding of manufacturing processes across wood, metal, plastics, and acrylics.
  • Expertise in DFM, cost engineering, and production optimisation.
  • Ability to produce detailed technical drawings, BOMs, and fabrication-ready documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a practical, solutions-driven mindset.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to engineering accuracy.
  • Strong English language skills enabling work with global communities.
  • Degree in Product Design, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Typically, 5-8+ years' experience in retail displays, POS, furniture, shopfitting, product development, or a related engineering field.
  • Proven experience developing products from concept through manufacture and implementation.
  • Experience working directly with suppliers and manufacturing partners.
  • Demonstrable portfolio showcasing engineering solutions and technical development work.
  • Knowledge of sustainable design practices and circular design principles.
  • Experience working across global supply chains and multiple production regions.
  • Technical expert and solutions driven.
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong ownership of outputs.
  • Collaborative, approachable, and confident working across teams.
  • Commercially aware, balancing design intent with cost and production realities.
  • Proactive and hands-on, with a strong sense of accountability.
