Payroll & Timekeeping Specialist – Field Operations

Houston · On-site

About this role

With over 19 years of experience and hundreds of million-dollar projects completed, Hays Electrical Services provides excellent service to customers in the hospitality, commercial, and solar industries. Hays Electrical Services approaches each project with a cooperative mindset, working with business owners, contractors, and subcontractors towards the common goal – successful project delivery.

Position Overview

We are looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented Payroll & Timekeeping Specialist – Field Operations to join our Houston team. As our field workforce continues to grow, this role is key to maintaining timekeeping control, accuracy, and compliance at the source. You will collaborate with field supervisors, project managers, and senior finance leadership to resolve time and attendance discrepancies, manage complex job coding, per diems, and temporary-worker time tracking, and guide our upcoming technological transition to Workday Time Tracking with CloudApper.

Key Responsibilities

  • Field Time & Attendance Administration: Take ownership of daily timekeeping discrepancies, missing or incorrect punches, and job-cost coding for a high-volume, hourly field workforce.

  • System Migration & Implementation Support: Actively participate in testing, user training, and cutover activities as we transition our timekeeping infrastructure from Miter to Workday Time Tracking with CloudApper.

  • Compliance & Prevailing Wage Auditing: Review and audit field hours, per diem allocations, and temporary-worker records to ensure strict adherence to prevailing wage regulations, certified payroll guidelines, and company policies.

  • Supervisor Coaching & Field Support: Serve as the first line of defense for field supervisors and project managers. Provide hands-on training, troubleshooting, and support for electronic, mobile, or biometric timekeeping systems.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate closely with AP, AR, and payroll departments to ensure project financial accuracy, streamline time-capture workflows, and transition operational responsibilities away from core payroll leadership.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum of 2–4 years of experience in payroll administration, time and attendance management, or field operations support—ideally within the construction, electrical contracting, or heavy field-service industries.

  • Technical Expertise: Familiarity with modern electronic or biometric timekeeping systems. Experience with Workday Time Tracking, CloudApper, and Miter is strongly preferred.

  • Compliance Knowledge: Solid understanding of prevailing wage regulations, certified payroll reporting, and wage-and-hour compliance.

  • Communication & Support Skills: Exceptional interpersonal and training skills, with the ability to patiently support field supervisors and remote workers who may struggle with software adoption.

  • Problem-Solving Mindset: High attention to detail, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability in a fast-paced, growing operational environment.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive Benefits: Includes medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).

  • Career Development: Opportunities for growth in a stable, expanding company.

  • Supportive Culture: A team-oriented work culture valuing quality, service, and innovation.
