Applied Legal Researcher
At Harvey, we're transforming how legal and professional services operate through frontier agentic AI and deep domain expertise. As an Applied Legal Researcher, you'll bridge the gap between complex legal workflows and AI systems, working directly with our engineering, product, and design teams to build the next generation of AI-powered professional services tools. This role is critical to scaling our product across 1000+ customers in 58+ countries and translating real customer pain points into technical solutions.
What you'll do
- Develop and deliver subject-matter expertise to support AI research and system development
- Work closely with engineering, product, and design teams to define and build AI systems that accelerate legal workflows
- Build and improve AI systems through prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and other optimization techniques
- Create proprietary benchmarks and datasets to evaluate model performance and capabilities
- Partner directly with clients to understand their workflows, identify pain points, and translate complex business and legal requirements into technical solutions
- Execute hands-on work including grading model outputs, analyzing documents, and performing detailed quality assurance
What Harvey is looking for
- JD or equivalent post-graduate legal qualification
- 3-7 years of professional experience at a law firm, financial institution, or similar professional services organization
- Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality work on demanding deadlines
- Strong communication skills across internal and external stakeholders, with ability to translate complex problems between technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to define success criteria and drive outcomes in ambiguous situations
- Deep intellectual curiosity and eagerness to learn across domains
- Willingness to engage in detailed, hands-on work essential to training and evaluating AI systems
