Harvard University Health Services (HUHS), part of University Central Administration (CADM), is the on-site multi-specialty medical practice and health administration for the Harvard community. It provides care to students, faculty, staff, eligible post-docs, retirees, and their dependents. HUHS also manages two university-owned health plans, HUGHP and SHIP, and collaborates with other departments to address public health needs.

Job Description

Provides general labor in support of building operations activities including performing general/preventive maintenance, miscellaneous carpentry and painting, and troubleshooting and making minor repairs to mechanical and electrical systems, HVAC, plumbing, and appliances.  Completes work requests and operational assignments with minimum supervision.  Participates in building inspections and performs other duties, including but not limited to, operating the HUHS van to deliver mail, medical records, and supplies for HUHS.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Transports medical records, medical supplies, mail, lab specimens, vaccines and x-rays between HUHS, satellite clinics and other facilities.
  • Maintains HUHS van. Keeps van in an appropriately clean condition for transporting medical supplies.  Takes van to UOS Fleet Services for oil/filter changes and seasonal maintenance.
  • Performs light maintenance on building plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems.
  • Troubleshoots leaks and temperature control problems.
  • Performs miscellaneous carpentry repairs, including dry wall patching, painting, and improvements to offices and clinical spaces. Installs wall mounted equipment.  Adjusts and repairs door and cabinet hardware.
  • Works alone and with other Central Services staff to ensure the responsibilities of the department are carried out, e.g., unloading trucks, moving furniture and responding to requests for help or assistance.
  • Coordinates maintenance repair work with Harvard Real Estate and various outside contractors. 
  • Schedules and coordinates time off with other department staff to ensure coverage.
  • Attends and participates in departmental staff meetings.
  • Other job related duties as required, employee may be cross trained to assist with departmental needs as they arise.

Compliance

  • Adheres to the expectations and professional responsibilities of the department. 
  • Employs the standards, practices, and procedures of the department. 
  • Completes and complies with HUHS training requirements including HIPAA Privacy and Security. 
  • Reports non-compliance incidents to the supervisor, manager, and/or Compliance Officer.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school graduate with previous experience and knowledge of general/preventive maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical systems, plumbing, and appliances. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Computer proficient. 

Preferred Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of HVAC controls.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Valid driver’s license required

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Additional Information

Standard Hours/Schedule: 40 hours per week M-F 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Other Information: This position has a 3-month Orientation and Review period. HUHS roles may operate across multiple locations. This position may require some travel.
