Senior/Staff Backend Engineer
About this role
We're looking for a Senior/Staff Backend Engineer with 5+ years of experience who has built or been a core contributor to a database, queue, or large-scale data system. You should be AI-native, bias-to-action by default, and have a track record of scaling infrastructure under real load. This is a top priority hire as Hamming scales from 30K to 100K+ concurrent voice agent calls and begins building its own purpose-built database for conversational AI -- a system that will become a multi-year moat for the company. Bonus points if you have voice or audio pipeline experience, or come from an observability or data infrastructure company.
Responsibilities
Build our conversational AI database -- design and implement a purpose-built database for voice agent call data, thinking deeply about storage structure, query paths, and retrieval at scale
Scale simulation infrastructure from 30K to 200K+ concurrent calls, architecting for graceful degradation and 99.99% uptime
Own core backend services in TypeScript/Node.js and Python orchestrating LiveKit, Temporal, STT/TTS, and LLM tooling for real-time voice agents
Harden production monitoring pipelines so telephony events, recordings, and outcomes propagate reliably across services at massive scale
Deepen observability with OpenTelemetry/SigNoz and trace-first practices -- make "what happened?" a 30-second question, not a war room
Ship the smallest working element in week one, learn from it, and build from there -- we deploy to prod 4x/day
Company at a glance
Hamming automates testing for AI voice agents by simulating thousands of diverse calls to evaluate system performance. Led by experienced founders from Tesla and Anduril, the company addresses critical quality assurance gaps in voice AI deployment.
