TITLE: Part-time Tutor

DEPARTMENT: Youth Services Department

LOCATION: Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY

PROGRAM: Community Schools Initiative 

REPORTS TO: Community School Director

SALARY RANGE: $20/hour,15 hours a week

SCHEDULE: Flexible hours, Monday - Friday; Scheduling may vary due to program needs

DATE: September 2026 - June 2027

JOB SUMMARY: The tutor will be responsible for providing daily after-school homework help and small-group tutoring to elementary school students. The tutor will track students' academic progress and implement academic interventions to support students. The tutor will work closely with parents to engage them in supporting students with homework and test preparation. In addition, the tutor will work closely with the Community School Team (director, social worker, community engagement coordinator, and outreach worker) to provide resources that will enhance the Community School.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • College student required; Bachelor's degree preferred 

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish is preferred 

  • At least 1-2 years' experience teaching, tutoring, and/or engaged in educational support, specifically in Math, Science, History, & ELA

  • Experience working with elementary students and behavior management

  • Strong organizational and computer skills

  • Demonstrate the ability to handle multiple tasks

  • Excellent facilitation and communication skills

  • Outstanding collaborative skills

  • Candidate must complete the following:   DOE & NYSDOH Fingerprinting Screening; New York State Clearance Review Background Check; 3 Reference Checks; Physical w/ updated TB Test (Fees may apply)

  • If offered the position, must submit a $25 fee for NY State Clearance Review.

  • Valid CPR/AED Pro certification through a recognized accrediting body preferred.

  • Valid First Aid/RTE certification through a recognized accrediting body preferred.

  • Candidates must be able to communicate effectively with students while remaining professional at all times, and motivate students while setting an example in responsibility, timeliness, organization, attendance, and, most importantly, professionalism.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will assist with the academic enrichment component of the Community School

  • Track student academic progress and outcomes of academic interventions

  • Keep records of student attendance and provide summaries of weekly student interventions

  • Provide direct subject remediation to participants

  • Develop and maintain a bank of educational resources + binder

  • Manage participants' behavior (ensuring that all program areas are safe)

  • Responsible for the proper use and maintenance of all program supplies

  • Encourage and support the completion of homework and school projects

  • Establish close relationships with student parents and teachers

  • Encourage parents to attain higher levels of education and provide GED and/or ESL tutoring for parents on a case-by-case basis.

  • Maintain ongoing open communication with parents and school-based staff

  • Call parents regarding student performance and address parent concerns 

  • Chaperone youth group during trips, sporting events, games, and other field activities

  • Communicate with supervisor regarding design and implementation of program, communicate barriers and brainstorm solutions 

  • Assist with all aspects of programming (i.e., following the organization's mission; supervising all youth, working collectively, and communicating with all staff)

  • Create and follow through on lesson plans and curricula 

  • Work closely with community engagement coordinator, social worker, and outreach worker to support targeted student needs.

  • Attend all required department/ agency meetings and/ or trainings

  • Other/ special duties as assigned by the director, community engagement coordinator, or senior staff
