POSITION: Group Leader – School Year 2026-2027 ONLY
DEPARTMENT: Youth Services Department
LOCATION: The Rose Center, 80 Pitt St., New York, NY 10002
REPORTS TO: Program Director, Assistant Director
SALARY: $20.00 hourly
DATES: September 1, 2026- June 30, 2027
SCHEDULE: [Monday–Friday] 3 pm- 6 pm. This position is performance-based and contingent on funding.

JOB SUMMARY: 

As part of our Youth Services Department’s vision, all Youth Services Staff will help promote growth, leadership, and a positive self-image among young people across our Grand Street Settlement sites. Group Leaders will promote and develop a safe and engaging learning environment for youth. Recreational activities, literacy and math lessons, and hands-on enrichment are integral parts of the summer camp experience. In the end, students will be able to maintain an academic focus while engaging in fun and educational activities with peers.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School diploma required; college degree preferred
  • Youth development experience required
  • Experience teaching and designing curricula
  • Previous experience working with diverse young people
  • Three (3) or more years of experience & expertise working with youth (volunteer experience is acceptable)
  • Three (3) or more years of experience coaching, instructing, or facilitating curriculum-based lessons (to youth preferred)
  • Ideal candidate is personable, energetic, and enthusiastic
  • Must complete the following:
    • NYSDOH Fingerprinting Screening
    • New York State Clearance Review Background Check
    • Three (3) Reference Checks
    • Physical with updated TB Test (Fees may apply)
    • Submit a $25 fee for NY State Clearance Review (if offered the position)
  • Valid CPR/AED Pro certification through a recognized accrediting body preferred
  • Valid First Aid/RTE certification through a recognized accrediting body preferred
  • Must communicate effectively with youth while maintaining professionalism and demonstrating responsibility, timeliness, organization, and leadership

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Training

  • Complete 15 hours of training as per summer camp child care requirements within the first three months of hire

Supervise Participants

  • Problem-solve and intervene directly with youth
  • Maintain adequate staff-to-participant supervision during all activities and trips.

Facilitate Afterschool Activities

  • Design and implement unit-basedcurriculas on the given themes
  • Manage group activities and ensure consistent engagement
  • Work collaboratively with co-workers, cultivate a culture of professionalism, and act as a role model for youth participants.
  • Follow daily in-house, trip, and activity schedules and procedures
  • Build a positive and cohesive group culture

Ensure Safety

  • Supervise a group of children and participate in all scheduled activities and trips.
  • Provide competent supervision of a group of children; participate in activities and trips; and provide and maintain a safe and professional working environment.
  • Maintain supplies in first aid and safety kits
  • Keep updated medical and emergency contact records for each participant
  • Responsible for documenting incidents and communicating incidents with supervisors and/or parents and guardians
  • Prepare attendance and other required reports
  • Follow all regulations and procedures outlined in the camp’s safety plan

Other Responsibilities

  • Communicate regularly and appropriately with parents
  • Work collaboratively with co-workers, cultivate a culture of professionalism, and act as a role model for youth participants.
  • Complete all required paperwork.
  • Come ready to work with a positive attitude and provide support and encouragement to youth.s
  • Supervise and evaluate youth staff
  • Fulfill other assignments as needed
  • Clean, organize, and maintain workspaces and shared spaces throughout the facility. 
  • Other assignments as required by the program director.
