Swim Instructor
About this role
- Deliver swim instruction based on the Goldfish Swim School curriculum with consistency, energy, and a focus on student growth.
- Enforce safety rules and regulations on the pool deck daily to prevent accidents and maintain a secure environment.
- Accurately evaluate student progress and complete skill evaluations on time.
- Connect with parents and guardians after lessons to share student updates, celebrate wins, and address concerns with care.
- Use creative problem-solving to help students work through challenges and keep progressing.
- Maintain and properly store all pool equipment, including placing and removing lane lines.
- Assist with light cleaning duties such as deck mopping, window washing, and trash removal as needed.
- Reliable, upbeat, and ready to show up with energy every shift.
- Eagerness to obtain a Lifeguard certification and a desire to grow.
- Experience as a certified lifeguard, youth sports coach, camp counselor, or childcare provider, or similar.
- Comfortable and confident in the water - swimming experience strongly preferred.
- A natural communicator who connects easily with kids and puts parents at ease.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to track multiple students’ progress accurately.
- Must be available for evening and weekend shifts.
- While performing this job, the employee is regularly exposed to heat, humidity, and chlorine. Noise level is usually moderate.
- Every student is progressing and no child is slipping through the cracks.
- Families feel informed, appreciated, and excited about their child’s development.
- Lessons are delivered with consistency and enthusiasm, exactly as the curriculum intends.
- The pool deck is safe, clean, and ready before the first student arrives.

Goldfish Swim School was founded in 2005 by husband and wife team Chris and Jenny McCuiston. Chris and Jenny took a concept that they formulated with nearly two years of research, and cultivated a business that provides results in the learn-to-swim environment that you simply can’t find anywhere else. Their proprietary curriculum and systems were developed after traveling the country in search of the “best practices” to teach babies and young children how to swim.
The first school, in Birmingham, Michigan, opened in 2006, and quickly saw success. Opening its doors with over 500 students at inception, Goldfish currently teaches more than 70,000 students per month across the franchise system.
At the beginning of 2008, it made sense to begin the franchising process. As of early 2017, we are currently in the process of expanding franchise opportunities throughout the country and internationally, with over 80 schools open or in development in more than 23 states and Canada.
