We are seeking Oromo Over-the-Phone Interpreters (OPI) to support our USCIS contract. Oromo, also known as Afaan Oromo, is one of the most widely spoken languages in the Horn of Africa, primarily in Ethiopia and Kenya, and is a priority language often required for asylum and immigration interviews.
- Provide real-time Oromo ↔ English telephonic interpretation for USCIS interviews, hearings, and asylum proceedings.
- Interpret accurately, impartially, and with professionalism in immigration and legal contexts.
- Maintain confidentiality under USCIS/DHS interpreter standards.
- Handle both scheduled and urgent/surge requests.
- Participate in training, compliance refreshers, and quality assurance audits.
- Native or near-native fluency in Oromo and English.
- 2+ years of professional interpreting experience (immigration, legal, NGO, medical, or government preferred).
- Strong cultural knowledge of Oromo-speaking communities in East Africa.
- Familiarity with interpreter ethics, confidentiality, and impartiality standards.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident eligible for Tier 3/Tier 5 security clearance.
- Competitive pay: $28–35/hour (rare-language premium).
