Intermediate Civil Designer - Transportation

We’re looking for a Civil Designer - Transportation to join our growing Canadian Operations. To be successful, you must have a minimum of 5-10 years of civil design experience utilizing Civil 3D on transportation infrastructure projects, including highways, municipal roads, transit facilities, and multi-modal transportation corridors. The Civil Designer will cooperate and work closely with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, regional team leads across Ontario, Canada, North America and GHD’s global network.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
- Preparation of civil drawings and details from conception to final design in a 3D modelling environment such as Civil 3D, according to established standards and procedures for a wide variety of projects, including highway and roadway design, municipal infrastructure, grading and drainage systems, utility coordination, transportation corridors, and site development projects.
- Contributing to design development and applying design standards on transportation and linear infrastructure projects.
- Reviewing and preparing models and drawings and working together with Engineers to develop detailed drawings, quantities and various supporting documents.
- Working in various procurement strategies such as Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build environments to advance civil design packages.
- Supporting and mentoring junior and developing Technicians.
- Following BIM Execution Plans and project requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
- Providing support and training to junior and developing Technicians on Civil 3D and project BIM standards and procedures.
- Adhering to GHD BIM standards and procedures and implementing compliance at the project level.
- Providing input into BIM scope, schedule, and budget when required.
- Quantity take-offs and estimate support.
- Producing consistent, high-quality civil deliverables.
- Communication with civil leads, designers, and project team members on a regular basis to facilitate an effective and timely flow of project information to meet scheduled deadlines.
- Participating, when required, in the advancement of GHD Standard Civil/Transportation Details and BIM Standards, including promoting changes, supporting updates to tools and methods, assisting with training development and lessons learned exercises.
What you will bring to the team:
- Technician/Technologist with a Civil Engineering Technology diploma. A career background in Civil Engineering would be considered an asset.
- 5-10 years of civil design, drafting and modelling experience. (Mandatory)
- Proven experience in roadway design, grading, drainage, utility design and transportation infrastructure projects using Civil 3D, including preparation of plans, profiles, cross-sections and detail drawings.
- Experience using Civil 3D corridor modelling and pipe network tools.
- Experience with 3D model development, design production, annotation and drafting.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving and organizational skills.
- High proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D is mandatory. Knowledge of Bentley software such as MicroStation and OpenRoads, as well as Navisworks, Dynamo and Revit, would be considered assets.
- Experience on MTO, municipal roadway, transportation infrastructure, or major corridor projects is considered an asset.
- Ability to perform design tasks within a multidisciplinary environment by collaborating with team members from other disciplines.
- Good understanding of the level of effort required to complete assigned work.
- Positive attitude and strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Competency with BIM collaboration tools such as ProjectWise or Autodesk Construction Cloud.
- Strong communication skills for a team-based environment and an ability to support project teams in BIM/CAD best practices.
- Ability to interact with external stakeholders to interpret and understand BIM/CAD requirements and project delivery requirements.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously within a team environment.
- Able to work under and meet tight deadlines.
The hourly range for this position is $30.48 - $50.80. The posted salary rates represents the expected hiring range for GHD locations in its major city centres. Ranges may vary for positions in other locations. At GHD, base salary is determined by your skills, experience, qualifications and work location.
