Scientist 3, Neuro iPSC Disease Modeling Group / Stem Cell Neurobiology

South San Francisco · On-site$103k – $192k

About this role

The Position

The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated, hands-on, and creative Scientist to advance research and drug discovery efforts within our Neuroscience team. In this role, you will lead the generation and application of complex iPSC-derived in vitro models and functional assays to understand the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, directly informing therapeutic interventions and pipeline advancement. You will bring technical mastery in stem cell biology and CRISPR engineering together with experimental rigor to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced research environment.

  • Design and optimize differentiation protocols for human iPSC-derived central nervous system (CNS) cell lineages, including neurons, microglia, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes.

  • Leverage gene editing (CRISPR/Cas9) and cellular engineering to create disease-relevant mutants, reporter lines, and knockout models.

  • Develop physiologically relevant co-culture or 3D cellular models to examine complex neurodegenerative phenotypes.

  • Establish and execute robust molecular and functional cell-based assays, including qPCR, RNA-seq, proteomics, immunostaining, high-content imaging, and flow cytometry.

  • Lead the design of arrayed or pooled functional CRISPR screens to identify novel disease modifiers and therapeutic targets.

  • Analyze multi-dimensional cellular, genetic, and functional datasets to draw scientifically rigorous conclusions and influence program directions.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to share insights clearly with project teams and leadership through reports and scientific presentations.

Who You Are

  • Education & Experience: Ph.D. in Stem Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Immunology, or a related scientific discipline (0–3 years of research experience in academia, biotech, or pharmaceuticals).

  • Stem Cell Expertise: Demonstrated hands-on expertise in human iPSC culture, quality control, genetic engineering, and directed differentiation into CNS cell types.

  • Functional Genomics: Direct experience executing CRISPR-based genetic perturbation strategies and functional screening workflows.

  • Molecular & Cellular Assays: Strong background in advanced optical imaging, molecular profiling, biochemistry, and quantitative cellular assays.

  • Core Competencies: Proactive mindset, clear communication skills, and a strong commitment to data integrity and collaborative teamwork.

Preferreds

  • Experience establishing multi-cellular co-culture models and disease-relevant functional assays (e.g. protein misfolding and aggregation assays)

  • Experience with non-viral delivery methods (e.g., LNPs) or viral vectors (lentivirus, AAV) in primary or iPSC-derived CNS models

  • Experience with automated liquid handlers, high-throughput screening workflows, or single-cell sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis using R and/or Python

  • Familiarity with AI/machine learning-based image analysis for cellular phenotyping

  • Pharmaceutical industry experience a plus
