Are you a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) looking for an opportunity to expand your skills in retina care and patient coordination?

Eye Associates of New Mexico is seeking an experienced COA / Retina Treatment Coordinator to join our team. This position combines hands-on ophthalmic technician responsibilities with patient coordination, scheduling, and support for retinal injections and laser procedures.

What You'll Do

In this role, you'll work closely with our retina physicians, technicians, patients, and clinic teams to coordinate treatment and provide excellent patient care.

Responsibilities include:

  • Schedule retinal injections and laser procedures according to physician treatment plans
  • Coordinate appointments and communicate with patients regarding treatment scheduling
  • Initiate prior authorizations for procedures and medications when needed
  • Complete patient pre-registration for scheduled procedures
  • Review patient charts and treatment information for accuracy
  • Document patient communications, cancellations, no-shows, and rescheduled appointments
  • Maintain and track medications used for intravitreal injections
  • Order injection medications and coordinate drug returns or replacements
  • Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic medical record and applicable systems
  • Prepare patients for physician examinations and treatment
  • Perform ophthalmic testing and technician duties as needed
  • Work closely with physicians, technicians, and other departments to provide a smooth patient experience

Clinical Skills

This position may also perform ophthalmic technician duties, including:

  • Visual acuity testing
  • Intraocular pressure measurements
  • Pupillary measurements
  • Confrontation visual fields
  • Muscle motility testing
  • Slit lamp examinations
  • Retinoscopy and refraction
  • Administration of dilating drops as appropriate
  • Documentation of patient history, medications, and other relevant information

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong customer service and patient-care skills

Preferred:

  • Retina, ophthalmology, or specialty eye-care experience
  • Experience coordinating procedures, injections, or specialty treatments
  • Prior authorization experience
  • Strong computer and electronic medical record skills
  • Typing speed of at least 35 words per minute
