Senior Commodity Manager
About this role
As the Commodity Manager, you will serve as the recognized subject-matter expert for strategic sourcing across raw materials and other key commodities. You will lead the development and execution of strategic sourcing strategies for metals and raw materials - with a strong focus on copper, aluminum, steel, and other key commodities - while extending your scope across electronics, machining, castings and forgings, and buyouts. You will shape Emerson’s long-term commodity roadmap, build global supplier networks, manage market and pricing risks, and drive sustainability and cost-optimization initiatives across the supply chain, operating with a high degree of independent judgment and providing technical mentorship to colleagues, without direct people-management responsibility. We look forward to seeing your application!
Lead the development and execution of multi-year sourcing strategies for metals and raw materials (copper, aluminum, steel, nickel), including market analysis on LME/COMEX/SHFE and macroeconomic risk evaluation, while extending category ownership across electronics, machining, castings and forgings, and buyouts.
Build and manage strategic global supplier networks, including primary and secondary metal suppliers, recycling streams, and new markets across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Develop cost models, pricing structures, indexation formulas, and hedging approaches to manage cost, volatility, and long-term supply security.
Drive complex supplier negotiations, framework and quality assurance agreements, performance management, and improvement programs, ensuring alignment with quality, delivery, sustainability, and compliance requirements (REACH, RoHS, ESG, LkSG).
Support Engineering and cross-functional teams with RFQs, early supplier involvement in NPD, manufacturability insights, and validation of technical and financial data.
Provide commodity forecasts, market intelligence, inflation updates, and risk assessments to senior stakeholders, implementing early-warning systems and continuity plans.
Conduct supplier audits, capability assessments, and technical evaluations, while maintaining accurate supplier data and contributing to Perfect Execution initiatives.
Own the business case and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) validation for sourcing decisions, presenting fact-based recommendations to leadership and supporting Value Delivery and Profit Review reporting cycles.
Translate Emerson’s multi-year cost-savings and supply network strategy into actionable category roadmaps, ensuring sourcing initiatives are directly linked to Profit Plan and long-term strategic commitments.
Serve as the senior subject-matter expert for commodity management practice, defining standard ways of working and mentoring less experienced colleagues, without direct supervisory responsibility.
Dedicate ~30% travel time for supplier development, relationship building, and on-site evaluations.
You quickly and decisively take actions in fast-changing, unpredictable situations. You show a tremendous amount of initiative in tough situations and are exceptional at spotting and seizing opportunities. You set aggressive goals and have high standards. You pursue everything with energy, drive, and the need to finish. You formulate a clear strategy and map aggressive steps that will accelerate the organization toward its goals.
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Supply Chain, Business, Engineering, or a related field, with a minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, or commodity/category management (or 8 years with a Master’s degree).
Strong background in raw materials procurement — especially copper, aluminum, steel, and other metals — with the ability to extend across electronics, machining, castings and forgings, and buyouts.
Understanding of global commodity markets and trading platforms (LME, COMEX, SHFE) and experience with indexation, hedging, cost models, and pricing strategies.
Ability to analyze technical data, supplier capabilities, and financial models to support complex, non-routine sourcing decisions.
Experience with supplier negotiations, contracting, and performance management in an international environment.
Demonstrated ability to operate independently on complex, non-routine sourcing issues, exercising advanced judgment to define methods and evaluation criteria with minimal supervision, with work reviewed upon completion.
Experience mentoring, coaching, or guiding less experienced colleagues on technical and category matters, without formal people-management responsibility.
Strong communication skills, strategic mindset, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams and senior stakeholders.
Availability to travel approximately 30% for supplier visits and development.
Experience developing global supplier networks for primary and secondary metals, including recycling streams, as well as electronics, machined, cast, forged, and bought-out components.
Exposure to global tenders, new market exploration, and cost-optimization programs.
Knowledge of integrating sustainability into procurement strategies, including CO₂ reduction, responsible sourcing, recyclability, and transparency.
Familiarity with ESG, REACH, RoHS, LkSG, and other compliance frameworks.
Experience supporting NPD through early supplier involvement and design-for-manufacturability input.
Ability to standardize processes, drive synergies, and support global procurement initiatives.
