Job Description

Senior Bridge Engineer is a senior-level structural engineering position based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, responsible for leading the detailed design and delivery of bridge infrastructure projects. The role supports multidisciplinary transportation engineering teams engaged in bridge rehabilitation and new bridge design, covering project phases from concept development through construction and contract administration.

The position involves structural analysis, engineering design, technical review, stakeholder coordination, and project management for transportation structures. Responsibilities include preparation and review of engineering calculations, design models, specifications, quantities, cost estimates, tender documentation, and technical reports while ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.

The ideal candidate brings 15+ years of bridge engineering experience involving steel and concrete bridge structures, extensive exposure to Alberta transportation and municipal projects, and demonstrated capability leading detailed design, project delivery, construction support, and multidisciplinary coordination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead detailed structural design and bridge rehabilitation assignments for transportation infrastructure projects through all project delivery phases.
  • Prepare and review structural analysis calculations, engineering models, and design documentation for bridge structures.
  • Develop project scope definitions, schedule development plans, budgets, and engineering work programs.
  • Produce and review technical reports, specifications, quantities, cost estimates, and tender documentation.
  • Execute design review activities for new bridge construction and rehabilitation projects.
  • Provide structural evaluation, field investigation, inspection, and rehabilitation services for transportation structures.
  • Perform quality control reviews of engineering deliverables prepared by junior engineers.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering design activities with highway, foundation, environmental, drainage, and electrical teams.
  • Maintain client relationships through stakeholder coordination, technical communication, and project delivery support.
  • Manage project teams, project schedules, budgets, and risk management activities.
  • Provide technical oversight and mentoring to Engineers, Designers, and CAD Designer/Drafters.
  • Support construction inspection, construction liaison services, and contract administration activities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable bridge design codes, regulatory requirements, and engineering standards.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or PE).
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive bridge design and/or Project Management experience on Alberta Transportation & Economic Corridors (TEC) and municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with TEC bridge inventory including standard bridges, bridge sized culverts, and major bridge structures.
  • Proven capability leading detailed design and contract preparation assignments independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency with Midas and CSiBridge structural analysis software.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Alberta bridge standards and policies
    • CSA S6 Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code
    • AASHTO Codes
    • AREMA Codes
  • Experience providing construction liaison services and acting as Contract Administrator.
  • Ability to review and approve technical design reports.
  • Strong verbal and written technical communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
  • Extensive bridge rehabilitation project experience.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Advanced client management and stakeholder engagement experience.
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior engineering staff.
  • Broad exposure to transportation corridor improvement programs and municipal capital infrastructure projects.
