Verification Engineer

United Kingdom - Malmesbury Office · On-site

About this role

About us

The Motor Test Systems Team is responsible for delivering the unmanned testing capability, test equipment, and laboratory infrastructure that support the Dyson Digital Motor research teams in the UK. The team develops, operates, and maintains automated test systems used to verify motor performance, reliability, durability, and compliance with engineering requirements.

In addition to executing verification activities, the team develops and maintains specialist test equipment, automated test software, and laboratory facilities while providing technical support to multidisciplinary engineering teams.

About the role

This position is ideally suited to an early-career engineer who enjoys solving practical engineering problems and wants broad exposure to electronics, software, mechanical design, testing and automation rather than specialising in a single discipline from day one.

The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience across multiple engineering disciplines while supporting the development and verification of Dyson's advanced motor technologies. The role offers opportunities to work on automated test systems, software development, data acquisition, reliability testing, equipment design, root cause analysis, and laboratory support activities.

Training and mentoring will be provided to support the development of specialist skills in areas such as LabVIEW, TestStand, CAD, automated testing, and motor verification.

Key Responsibilities

Verification & Testing

  • Plan, execute, and monitor motor and power system verification activities.

  • Develop, maintain, and improve verification procedures and test methods.

  • Manage verification activities and test schedules to support project delivery.

  • Produce clear and accurate verification reports to support design reviews and engineering decision-making.

  • Ensure high-quality, traceable, and repeatable test execution.

Test Equipment Development

  • Design, build, and commission test rigs, fixtures, instrumentation systems, and test enclosures.

  • Develop practical engineering solutions to improve test capability and laboratory efficiency.

  • Produce supporting engineering documentation, including test procedures, schematics, and operating instructions.

  • Support continuous improvement of verification equipment and test capabilities.

Test Automation & Software Development

  • Develop and maintain automated test software using Python, LabVIEW, TestStand, and other engineering software tools.

  • Improve existing test automation frameworks to increase efficiency, reliability, and test coverage.

  • Develop data acquisition, monitoring, and reporting solutions for automated test systems.

  • Support integration of sensors, instrumentation, and control systems into verification equipment.

Failure Investigation & Data Analysis

  • Analyse test data to identify trends, anomalies, reliability concerns, and performance issues.
  • Conduct root cause investigations of motor, software, and test equipment failures.
  • Present technical findings and recommendations to engineering teams.

Laboratory & Equipment Support

  • Support the maintenance, organisation, and continuous improvement of motor verification laboratories and test facilities.

  • Assist with equipment maintenance, servicing, calibration, and upgrades to ensure test capabilities remain reliable and effective.

  • Help coordinate laboratory improvements, equipment installations, and infrastructure projects.

  • Support the management of laboratory assets, consumables, and spare parts to minimise downtime.

  • Contribute to maintaining safe, efficient, and well-organised engineering workspaces.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with motor control, electronics, software, and mechanical engineers throughout motor research programmes.
  • Support technicians and students during verification activities.
  • Contribute to a collaborative engineering environment focused on technical excellence and continuous improvement.

About you

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.

  • Practical hands-on approach to engineering challenges.

  • Experience developing software using Python, C, C++, or similar programming languages.

  • Experience with electronic hardware design from schematic through to PCB fabrication and assembly

  • Good understanding of electronic systems and engineering fundamentals.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Enthusiasm for learning and developing new technical skills.

Desirable Skills

Previous experience in any of the following areas would be advantageous but is not essential:

  • Test rig, fixture, or enclosure design.

  • Automated testing and data acquisition systems.

  • LabVIEW, TestStand, or similar engineering software tools.

  • CAD packages such as SolidWorks, NX, Shapr or equivalent.

  • Electric motors, motor drives, power electronics, or control systems.
