AY2627 Tutor - Physics (Work-Study Preferred)

Tutors function as learning facilitators for introductory physics courses.  Tutors are not teachers, nor are they teaching assistants: they are Learning Assistants.  It is the tutor’s job to successfully lead a student to solve a problem on his or her own, without solving it for them.  

  • Essential Duties
  • Facilitate learning of challenging physics skills and concepts
  • Solve homework problems in advance in order to be adequately prepared to assist in the learning process of individual students.
  • Staff the Physics Tutoring Center during posted help hours.
  • Promote a learning atmosphere in the Physics Tutoring Center.
  • Assist in test administration and proctoring as needed in the department of physics.

Non-essential duties

  • Assist during recitations as needed

Stipend

Tutors receive a stipend of $12.00 an hour.  Only hours served in the Tutoring Center (Room 218 FH) can be remunerated.  While holding this job, a student may not take any additional Duquesne University employment.

Minimum qualifications

Excellent interpersonal skills, good customer service skills, dependability, ability to keep a rigid schedule.  Knowledge of general physics at the college level. Math proficiency at the level of high school algebra.
