Role Summary/Purpose

Required to set up chipping vice so that it will securely hold the piece while chipping and grinding is being performed. Operates the chipping hammer in the approved manner, working towards the shielded area whenever possible.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Operates the chipping hammer in the approved manner, working towards the shielded area whenever possible. 
  • Chipper will either (manually or using a hoist) handle a hot or cold flash welded ring into the vice and clamp it, lube, and chip off the excess jam or welded material, reposition piece, grind and change chisel when necessary, and grind and bank.
  • When assigned to do so by Supervisor, Chipper will assist Flash Welder Operator to tear down and set up the flash welder and trimmer or set up flash trimmer (75-591) for the next production run.
  • Must be able to operate 76-591 flash trimmer.
  • Perform grind and polish operations to meet specifications on ID and OD surfaces of American Sterilizer.
  • Coordinates work with flash welders and repair welders.
  • Must be able to operate manual beveling mill.
  • Train new operator.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Maintains neat and clean work area.
  • Ability to comply with all safety and ISO requirements.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED. 
  • Ability to understand written and verbal instruction.
  • Ability to read process sheets.
  • Consistently chip off hot jam material to within +/-1/32” of the parent metal without undercutting and grind weld to blend with parent metal.
  • Must be able to grind chisels for proper cutting edge; notify welder of bad welds.
  • Must plan chipping sequence to remove flash as quickly as possible.
  • Ability to clamp, fixture, and align parts, adjust feeds and speeds of multiple axes of beveling mill for proper bevel along length of long parts.
  • Equipment and Tools – hand air chipping hammer, hand air grinder, manual beveling mill, air vice, hoist hammer, wrenches, tow motor, and hand cart.
  • Product or Materials – alloy stainless steel, ground to within specified production tolerances generally chipped hot after flash welding. 
  • Exercise of Judgement - grind chisels for proper cutting edge; notify welder of bad welds.
  • Required to plan a sequence of jobs.
