MRI Scientist (m/f/d)
About this role
About us
DeepSpin is a HealthTech startup on a mission to make Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) universally accessible. Today, 7 out of 10 people globally lack access to this life-saving diagnostic tool. We are changing that. Driven by proprietary physics and AI-powered innovation, we are stripping away the multi-million dollar price tags and massive infrastructure requirements of traditional scanners to build affordable, mobile, ultra-low-field MRI systems.
Backed by leading global VCs, we are expanding our world-class Software R&D team in Berlin. This is a unique opportunity to join a high-impact team dedicated to bringing affordable medical imaging to billions of people worldwide.
About Position
You will join our cross-functional Software R&D team in Berlin, working at the intersection of computational physics, sequence design, and machine learning. You will be responsible for building sequences, and reconstruction algorithms that define how our low-field hardware operates and captures diagnostic-grade images.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will play a crucial part in achieving market-leading image quality on our mobile low-field MRI systems. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
Numerical Spin Simulations: Develop and refine numerical spin models to model machine behavior and non-ideal field dynamics.
Sequence Design & Optimization: Design, implement, and optimize custom pulse sequences tailored for low-field.
ML Integration: Integrate physical MRI domain models into our deep learning pipelines to enhance control loops, parameter mapping, and image reconstruction.
Image Reconstruction: Analyze raw k-space signal data from prototype hardware and build robust image/signal reconstruction algorithms.
Requirements
We value high agency, first-principles thinking, and practical problem-solving. While we welcome applicants with diverse STEM backgrounds, ideal qualifications include:
Required Qualifications
Advanced degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in Physics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
5+ years of experience applying computational mathematics and signal processing to MRI.
Hands-on experience designing pulse sequences and processing/reconstructing raw MRI k-space data.
Proficiency in Python and the scientific computing stack (PyTorch, NumPy, SciPy).
First-principles thinking, proactive problem-solving, and fluent English communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with low-field or ultra-low-field (<0.1T) MRI physics and hardware constraints.
Familiarity with clinical MRI workflows, phantom/tissue scanning, and diagnostic requirements.
Good foundation in software engineering best practices (version control, modular architecture, CI/CD).
A strong scientific track record (publications in leading MRI/computational journals or conference presentations like ISMRM/MICCAI).
What we offer
Compensation: A total package value of up to €120,000/year (consisting of an €70,000 - €80,000 base salary + benefits+ stock options).
Culture: A creative, collaborative workplace with flat hierarchies and open communication.
International Team: An English-first office with over 10 different nationalities driven by the same purpose.
Perks: Work from our penthouse office, enjoy company-sponsored lunches, regular team events, and access to Urban Sports Club, BVG (public transport), and lifestyle vouchers.
Development: High responsibility from day one, internal mentorship, and support for external training or certifications.
Balance: 30 days of paid annual leave and flexible working hours.
Relocation: Support with visas, relocation logistics, and help finding local daycare for your children.
Company at a glance
DeepSpin is developing a next-gen, AI-powered MRI imaging machine at a fraction of the cost, size and weight of standard systems.
Unleashing the power of generative topological design for our hardware and super-resolution deep learning on MRI images, we are taking medical imaging to the digital age.
Through our proprietary technology, we will be making MRI accessible to every patient globally. Join us in the journey to becoming the imaging standard of care in a myriad of previously inaccessible medical domains.
