JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Irrigation Manager, the Irrigation Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of existing irrigation systems in accordance with established standards. Working independently or with minimal supervision, this role ensures efficient workflow and timely completion of assigned tasks. The technician will operate various tools and equipment, including loud machinery, and perform duties in all weather conditions. This position is a full-time, year-round position. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM, with flexibility required for occasional weekend on-call shifts. Teamwork and collaboration are essential to support overall department goals.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

· Ensure irrigation systems are operating efficiently and in accordance with established standards to support the health, vitality, and aesthetic quality of plant material and landscapes throughout the garden.

· Perform routine maintenance and repairs on irrigation systems; promptly identify and report any malfunctions or issues.

· Implement and monitor irrigation schedules; conduct inspections, repair minor system issues, and report significant problems.

· Follow daily, weekly, and monthly schedules for irrigation projects as established by the Irrigation Manager.

· Lead and coordinate support staff during larger irrigation projects to ensure timely and efficient completion.

· Assist in overseeing external contractors performing irrigation and pump system repairs, as directed by the Irrigation Manager.

· Maintain accurate daily logs and regularly update documentation to track project progress and system status.

· Contribute to the development and implementation of written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for irrigation systems.

· Communicate supply needs to the manager in a timely manner using the Purchase Order system and assist with procurement of materials as needed.

· Safely operate equipment and ensure all tools and machinery are properly secured at the end of each workday

· Clean and maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment to ensure safety and functionality.

· Participate in the setup, operation, and breakdown of special events, including seasonal festivals and exhibits.

· Perform physically demanding tasks and manual labor in various weather conditions, including

extreme heat or cold.

· Work may involve exposure to moving mechanical parts, strong odors, dust, extreme temperatures, low lighting, high noise levels, gases, vibrations, chemicals, oils, and confined spaces.

· Must be able to perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Requirements

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS OR COMPETENCIES:

· Possession of a valid irrigation license or a minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in irrigation maintenance and installation.

· Strong working knowledge of various irrigation systems and pump operations.

· Previous supervisory experience is preferred.

· Demonstrated ability to organize workflow efficiently, complete tasks on schedule, and foster team collaboration while maintaining a professional work ethic.

· Skilled in managing multiple priorities and personnel using effective organizational and time management techniques.

· Proficient in verbal and written communication; basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

· Must hold a valid Texas driver’s license and be able to operate garden vehicles.

· Flexible and adaptable to changing work schedules and operational needs.

· Availability to work occasional weekends and holidays as required.

· Ability to pass all pre-employment requirements including background check, physical evaluations, and drug screening

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this role, the employee is regularly required to communicate verbally and listen effectively. The employee frequently must:

· Stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, push, pull, and lift

· Use hands and fingers to handle, feel, and operate tools or equipment

· Reach with hands and arms and perform repetitive motions

· Exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally

· Exert up to 20 pounds of force frequently or continuously to move objects
