Company at a glance
Our company started as a partnership between two high school students, John Cooper and Chris Tacia, in 1996. The two began a business splitting firewood and selling it by the truckload to local folks around Sanford, NC. Proceeds from selling firewood became the seed money for a small development in western Harnett County, NC.
Proceeds raised funded a modest development in nearby Harnett County and led to the creation of Southeastern Properties & Development Company, their first step into residential development and home construction.
In 2008, the Great Recession brought a pivotal shift. John transitioned into commercial construction, focusing on hospitality and restaurant spaces in Raleigh. He helped shape the city’s culinary scene by building some of its most celebrated restaurants, including Happy + Hale, Bida Manda, Gallo Pelon, Brewery Bhavana, Whiskey Kitchen, Crawford & Sons, and Jolie.
The company later expanded into industrial construction, taking on large-scale projects such as biofuel plants for Enviva Biomass, a lumber mill for Southeastern Timber Products, and a zinc refinery for American Zinc Recycling. With a growing team and deeper expertise, the firm broadened its portfolio to include K-12 schools, higher education campuses, research and training facilities, community centers, government buildings, aviation hangars, and retail spaces.
In 2020, the company rebranded as Cooper Tacia General Contracting, a name that reflects its growth across industry sectors and its expanding national reach. In 2024, we opened a second office in downtown Atlanta to support our growing footprint throughout the Southeast.
Today, Cooper Tacia is a full-service commercial and industrial general contracting firm. We are experienced in multiple delivery methods including Construction Manager at Risk, Design-Build, General Contracting, and Virtual Design and Construction. We remain committed to building with purpose, partnership, and integrity.
