Founding Engineer

CommodityAI is building modern software to automate the outdated, manual workflows that dominate the $25 trillion global commodity trading industry. Founded by a former sugar trader and backed by YC and leading investors, the company has grown to $600K in revenue with just a two-person engineering team. As the Founding Engineer, you’ll be the first hire beyond the founding team, shaping product and infrastructure in San Francisco and partnering with the CEO and CTO to turn ambiguity into actionable, scalable AI-powered solutions.

What youll do

• Own end-to-end full-stack feature development from concept to production.
• Collaborate with the CEO and CTO to translate ambiguous problems into structured, actionable solutions.
• Take deep ownership of the codebase and infrastructure, building scalable, AI-native tooling.
• Prototype rapidly and ship features quickly, iterating with customer feedback.
• Work hands-on with cutting-edge AI tools, transformer models, and Hugging Face.
• Help define product direction as the first non-founding engineer.
• Understand and refine key commodity-trading workflows to deliver tangible improvements.

What CommodityAI is looking for

• 4+ years of full-stack engineering experience.
• Experience in early-stage startups with ambiguity and autonomy.
• Experience as a founder or founding engineer.
• Experience building modern enterprise software at companies like Clay, Brex, or Scale AI.
• Experience with transformer models and Hugging Face.
• Proficiency in TypeScript and a statically typed language (e.g., Go, Java).
• Interest in or touchpoints with the commodity trading industry.
• Experience with AI-powered development tools (e.g., Cursor, Windsurf).
• Experience at VC-backed startups.
