Vision Mechanical Engineer II

About this role

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities: 

  1. Participate in all phases of the project, including design, testing and integration as required.
  2. Design precision mechanical assemblies for industrial machine vision systems. 
  3. Design camera mounts, optical fixtures, illumination assemblies, protective enclosures and precision alignment mechanisms. 
  4. Perform tolerance stack-up analysis and GD&T. 
  5. Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA). 
  6. Prototype and evaluate new mechanical concepts. 
  7. Support integration of cameras, optics, sensors and lighting into automated machinery.
  8. Conduct root cause investigations for mechanical and system performance issues. 
  9. Collaborate with suppliers to evaluate commercial components. 
  10. Generate complete engineering documentation including drawings, BOMs and ECOs. 
  11. Support prototype builds, validation testing and manufacturing release. 
  12. Participate in design reviews. 
  13. Support continuous product improvements.

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Qualifications: 

Education: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or comparable degree; MS Mechanical Engineering preferred

Experience: At least two or more years of practical experience developing and integrating optical machine vision systems (experience with industrial cameras, lenses, mirrors, beam splitters, machine vision lighting, strobed LED illumination). Experience should include working in an automated machinery environment.

Skills/Technical Requirements: Comfortable with large mechanical systems, hands-on person, Familiarity with or interest in industrial cameras and lighting systems for machine vision. 

Proficient in design and modeling applications such as Solidworks, GD&T, Tolerance analysis, Thermal considerations and design for Manufacturing, Sheet metal, Machined parts, Aluminum extrusions, Tooling. Knowledgeable in Mechanical, Electromechanical, Optical, and Automation Troubleshooting.

Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to provide direction or training to other team members; Strong analytical skills; Ability to manage multiple priorities; Ability to work independently

Job Conditions: 

Occasional domestic or international travel may be required.

Physical Demands/Strengths: 

Prolonged periods of sitting at a computer terminal.  Use of keyboard 

Protective Devices Required: In required areas.

Compensation: The estimated base pay range for this position is $99,720 to $113,400 per year, depending on qualifications, experience, education, and other job-related factors. This range represents Cohu’s good faith estimate of what it reasonably expects to pay for this role upon hire. This role may also be eligible for other compensation programs as determined by company policy.
