Team Lead Engineering
About this role
Clue is more than just a place to work. Our work empowers women and people with cycles to make informed decisions about their health. We break down barriers, myths, and taboos. Our workplace is agile, diverse, and full of opportunities for growth.
A NOTE FROM YOUR MANAGER
We're looking for an Engineering Team Lead to guide one of our cross-functional teams building the Clue product and the services it interacts with. Join us and help over 10 million monthly active users learn about their bodies and better live in sync with their biology. You'll lead a team of ~5 engineers, creating an environment where people, including very senior engineers, do their best work, ship outcomes that matter, and grow along the way.
This is a role for someone who leads by serving: you'll balance delivery, quality, and people, hold the team accountable to shared goals, and stay close enough to the technical work to be a genuine sparring partner for your engineers. You bring curiosity and pragmatism, let data inform your decisions, and are keen to explore how modern AI tools can accelerate how your team works.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Lead, develop, and manage a cross-functional team of ~5 engineers, creating the conditions for senior engineers to operate autonomously and take ownership.
- Partner with your product and design counterparts to manage the scope of product deliverables, acting as a product sparring partner who challenges and shapes what gets built and why.
- Champion an outcome-oriented, delivery-driven culture, ensuring agreed timelines are met and holding the team accountable for results.
- Communicate with business and technical stakeholders to balance requirements, make explicit tradeoffs, and keep the team aligned on the highest-impact work.
- Own team and platform health metrics, identify areas of technical debt within your area of ownership, and drive process, system, and structural improvements as a multiplier and champion of quality.
- Plan and execute activities in the context of quality and risk management.
- Stay technical by engaging in small technical initiatives without blocking or slowing down the team.
- Help the team navigate uncertainty and change, keeping people steady and focused as priorities evolve.
- Report to one of our Directors of Engineering.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- People Leadership: Previous experience managing engineers, ideally including staff engineers. You lead by serving, creating an environment where autonomy, ownership, and growth thrive.
- Cross-Functional Team Leadership: Experience leading a cross-functional team in an agile environment, with strong stakeholder management and the ability to drive alignment across product, design, and engineering.
- Technical Credibility: Hands-on background as a Backend, Native Mobile, or DevOps engineer — enough to hold substantive conversations with your engineers and engage in small initiatives yourself.
- Delivery, Tradeoffs & User Focus: You're delivery-driven and outcome-oriented, comfortable making pragmatic tradeoffs to focus resources where they matter most. You think beyond code, align engineering goals with business objectives, and keep the user at the center of decisions.
- Communication & Navigating Change: High emotional and relational intelligence, with strong verbal and written communication across technical and non-technical audiences. You make sound decisions in dynamic, fast-growing environments and help your team stay grounded through change.
- Observability & Quality: Experience with monitoring tools and services (e.g. Datadog, Sentry, Firebase) and a track record of protecting platform health, stability, and performance.
Don't meet every requirement? We still encourage you to apply — we're looking for potential and passion, not perfection.
