Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Machinist at our East Chicago, Indiana operation. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, quality-driven, and experienced in producing precision parts to print while supporting on-time delivery and continuous improvement.


The role will be part of our United Steelworkers (USW) union compensation, benefits, and pension agreement.


Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate CNC and/or manual machines (mills, lathes, grinders, etc.) to produce parts per specifications.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and work instructions.
  • Fit and assemble machined parts and dismantle mill maintenance equipment.
  • Operate pendant, remote crane, and lift truck as necessary.
  • Performs any layout work of parts as required.
  • Calculates and determines dimensions, tapers, indices, and other data using shop formulas and handbooks.
  • Measure and inspect parts using precision instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, indicators).
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and make adjustments to maintain quality and efficiency.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 4 years of proven machinist experience in a job shop or high-mix/low-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Have earned a high school diploma, GED, or equivalency from an accredited institution.
  • Be able to work full-time, including rotating shifts, and weekends.
  • Must pass required testing.
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Have a machinist certificate or card.
  • Strong measurement skills; GD&T.
  • Experience with CNC controls (Haas, Mazak).
