General Definition of Work

Performs difficult technical work of repairs, maintenance, and operations of police vehicles and equipment, completing maintenance reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned Supervisor. Limited oversight is exercised over Mechanic.

Essential Functions

Monitors, maintains, repairs, and performs preventative maintenance on assigned department vehicles and equipment; troubleshoots and diagnoses mechanical issues and formulates solutions.

Manages maintenance cost and inventory of parts and supplies.

Cleans and maintains working area and shop; ensures safe daily operations.

Receives work orders; completes required reports and documentation once maintenance is completed.

May be assigned to special projects and assignments depending on assigned department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of the practices and techniques of equipment and vehicle repair; comprehensive knowledge of the safe operation of medium to heavy construction equipment and vehicles; comprehensive knowledge of diagnosing mechanical issues; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; skill in the use of hand and power tools; skill in the use of mechanical diagnosing equipment; skill in the use and operation of assigned equipment and vehicles; ability to perform manual labor; ability to pay close attention to small details; ability to work and coordinate on multiple congruent projects; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, vendors, and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and extensive experience performing mechanical repairs, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires speaking or hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

May be required to gain additional trainings and certifications based on assigned department.

Valid commercial driver's license in the State of Indiana, may be required.

May be required occasional after-hours or emergency responses.

Must possess a complete set of personal mechanics tools.

Liability Insurance required of personal tools.
