2026 General Local and School Election

Are you energetic, enthusiastic and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills? Do you enjoy working in a fast-paced environment? If so, we are looking for you!

Reporting to the Presiding Election Official (PEO) and/or the Alternate Presiding Election Official (APEO), Machine Attendants (MA) are responsible to ensure that election procedures and rules are followed in a voting place.

Examples of key MA work activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Set up and dismantle the voting place, including voting booths, signage, and supplies
  • Assist electors with inserting their ballot into the vote counting unit/ballot box while maintaining ballot secrecy
  • Confirm with electors that their ballot has been accepted
  • Direct electors where to exit the voting location
  • Monitor vote counting unit messages and escalate to the PEO/APEO as required for resolution
  • Direct electors to the PEO or APEOs as required
  • Assist with closing, including cleanup, of the voting place after the close of voting at 8:00 p.m.
  • Perform other general duties throughout the voting place as assigned by the PEO/APEO

The Machine Attendant must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be legally entitled to work in British Columbia and have a Social Insurance Number
  • Be available to work on election day, Saturday, October 17, 2026
  • Attend mandatory in-person training and review all preparatory materials before Voting Day
  • Be responsible for their own transportation to and from the voting place
  • Be responsible for providing their own meals and beverages, as all staff are required to remain at the voting location until the end of their shift
  • Be able to stand for long periods of time
  • Not be actively working for any election campaign, elector organization or candidate
  • Not be related to a candidate running for office in the 2026 General Local and School Election
  • Be a non-partisan representative of the 2026 Richmond Election/City of Richmond and maintain neutrality regarding the election, candidates and related activities, including online and social media presence.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to interact with the public in a tactful and courteous manner
  • Ability to multitask and work effectively under pressure
  • Strong problem-solving skills for practical, on-the-spot issues
  • Ability to clearly explain procedures, including election processes
  • Basic knowledge of and aptitude for working with technology
  • Proficiency in a second language is considered an asset

Working Conditions:

  • Voting Hours: 8:00am to 8:00pm
  • Voting Day Hours of Work: Approximately 6:30am to 9:00pm or until dismissed by the PEO

Compensation rates:

  • Election Day Rate: $310 per day
  • Training Allowance: $75 total for training

The position of the Machine Attendant will remain open until all positions are filled
