About this role

Your Opportunity

At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us “challenge the status quo” and transform the finance industry together.

Schwab Technology Services enables the future of how clients manage their money by providing innovative and reliable technology products and services as part of our ongoing commitment to democratize access to investing and financial planning.

This position is for a Software Application Engineer who will contribute to the development of technical solutions within a distributed Java-based application ecosystem using micro-frontend and microservices architectural patterns. The role involves building skills in web platform engineering with Angular (including RxJS, state management, and component architecture) to help deliver high-performance, accessible, and secure client experiences.

As a member of the Sales and Service Technology organization, this role provides hands-on engineering support to help build scalable, resilient, and high-quality systems that support key business capabilities. The engineer will follow established front-end engineering standards for Angular applications—including design systems, module federation/micro-frontends, performance budgets, accessibility (WCAG), observability, CI/CD quality gates, and testing strategy.

The applicant will participate alongside engineering teams through the software development lifecycle—from solution design and architectural alignment (Java back-end services and Angular front-end integration) through implementation, testing, release, and ongoing support across the Sales and Service Technology portfolio. This includes learning and applying Angular best practices, following enterprise architecture guidelines, and contributing to delivery goals across agile teams.

This role collaborates with business stakeholders, product owners, architects, and technology partners across Schwab. The engineer is expected to support technical initiatives, assist with cross-team coordination, and contribute to the development of enterprise-grade Angular user interfaces integrated with Java-based services.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Contribute to agile engineering teams in delivering scalable, resilient software solutions across the Sales & Service Technology portfolio, following engineering best practices and enterprise standards.
  • Apply and grow technical skills across Java, Angular, micro-frontend, and microservices platforms, learning modern engineering practices and contributing to high-quality system design.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders, Product Owners, and Architecture to understand strategic objectives and support the delivery of key initiatives.
  • Participate in full SDLC activities—including design, implementation, testing, release, and production support—to help ensure operational reliability and consistent delivery.
  • Actively seek mentorship and learning opportunities while contributing to team goals and building foundational engineering capabilities.
  • Support cross-team coordination and assist with integration efforts across distributed systems, shared services, and front-end experiences.

What you have

Required Qualifications

  • 4–6 years of experience (or relevant internship/academic projects) building applications using Java, Spring, and Web Services.
  • Exposure to containers and microservices concepts in cloud environments.
  • 2+ years of experience (or relevant internship/academic projects) using Angular for front end development (or similar Typescript framework)
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipeline concepts and cloud deployment workflows.
  • Awareness of cloud platforms such as PCF, AWS, and/or GCP.
  • Basic knowledge of databases such as MongoDB, Redis, or SQL Server.
  • Ability to collaborate across Product Management, Architecture, SRE, and adjacent teams with a willingness to learn and contribute.
  • Comfortable working with distributed teams, including offshore partners and external stakeholders.
  • Eagerness to engage with SMEs and learn complex technical topics quickly.
  • Interest in solution discovery and foundational software design principles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and creative problem-solving mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of current architecture and development standards and guidelines.
  • Awareness of common design patterns and their use cases.
  • Exposure to .NET technologies (e.g., C#, ASP.NET Core, REST APIs, unit/integration testing).
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled development tools (e.g., code assistants, intelligent automation, AI-driven code analysis).
  • Interest in or exposure to the Financial Services industry.
  • Awareness of Test-Driven Development (TDD), QA automation, and quality-first engineering practices.
  • Ability to contribute to documentation such as diagrams, architectural/design documents, functional/technical specifications, and automated test processes.
  • Front-end framework experience or coursework:
    • Angular (TypeScript, components, services, dependency injection, routing)
    • React (JSX, hooks, state management, component lifecycle)
    • js or other modern front-end frameworks
    • Foundational understanding of state management patterns, component lifecycle, and rendering behavior
    • Familiarity with HTML, CSS/Sass, responsive design, and accessibility basics (WCAG)
  • Interest in performance optimization concepts for web applications.
