Position Introduction:

Goddard Health Center is the ambulatory care facility on the Norman campus, providing primary care services to students, faculty, staff, and their dependents. Under direct supervision of a physician or other medical personnel, performs routine patient care functions such as provider assistance, patient rooming, testing, information gathering, nursing duties, chaperoning, cleaning, supply maintenance, scheduling, and other duties as assigned. Coordinates schedules of patients in an outpatient clinic and provides clerical assistance toward the smooth operation of the facility.

Duties:

  • Provider Assistance. Assists physician or other medical personnel in the examination process as required or necessary. Performs order entry to electronic medical records per provider orders, i.e., lab orders, radiology orders, etc.
  • Patient Rooming. Places patients in exam rooms. Drapes and positions patients for appropriate exams or procedures.
  • Test Performance. Performs routine tests on patients such as hearing screens, Snellen vision testing, rapid strep, influenza, urinalysis, and urine pregnancy tests.
  • Information Gathering. Obtains and records vital signs including body temperature, height, weight, pulse, respirations, peak flows, and blood pressure. Takes and documents complaints and patient histories including allergies, immunization histories, etc. Maintains patient confidentiality. Receives and returns telephone calls from or to patients. Obtains authorizations and referrals.
  • Nursing. Assists with procedures. Administers influenza and COVID-19 vaccines. Collects specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Chaperoning. Chaperones examinations and patients.
    Supply Maintenance. Responsible for stocking clinic supplies and exam rooms, taking inventory, ordering supplies, and sterilizing instruments and/or equipment.
  • Scheduling. Makes scheduling arrangements with other healthcare professionals and facilities. Schedules patient appointments, either by telephone or in person. Obtains patient demographics on new patients and updates demographics on established patients.
  • Cleaning. Cleans exam rooms, workspaces, and common areas.
  • Phones. Answers telephone calls and distributes to the appropriate personnel.
  • As Needed. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position and toward the smooth operation of the facility.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED or completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program.
  • 6 months experience in patient care as a Medical Assistant or 6 months performing electronic order entry as a qualified ABR-OE.

Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept a student who has completed an internship/externship and graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program in lieu of required experience.

Required Certifications and Licenses:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
  • Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant or qualified ABR-OE or ability to obtain the certification within 90 days of employment in the position.

Department Preferences:

  • Two (2) years college/associate degree
  • 6 months of experience in direct patient care as a Medical Assistant
  • Autoclaving experience
  • Electronic Medical Record experience
  • Graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program
