Summary
American Progress is seeking a Vice President of Information Technology Services to serve as the organization’s senior technology leader, with deep technical depth across infrastructure, software development, data, and cybersecurity. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President will lead a unified function that spans these four domains and guide the organization through a period of meaningful change.
This hands-on role requires doing three things at once: building an IT team that staff can turn to as a proactive, solutions-oriented partner; modernizing core infrastructure for the fastest-path technology foundation; and shaping how American Progress adopts technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), responsibly across its work. The Vice President will set and execute strategy; build trust with senior leaders and staff; and translate ambition into reliable, secure, well-run systems.
Responsibilities
Set and execute American Progress' internal technology strategy, aligning infrastructure, software, data, and security investments with organizational priorities.
Serve as a senior adviser to the executive team on technology trends, opportunities, and risks.
Lead a unified IT function of approximately 10 staff and contractors across infrastructure, end-user services, software development, data, and security.
Direct the organization's network, end-user computing, and administrative systems, ensuring high availability and a strong staff experience.
Lead cloud migration and infrastructure modernization across core platforms, including Microsoft 365, Azure, Google Workspace, and primary SaaS applications.
Oversee internal software development, systems integration, and data capabilities—including data maintenance and provisioning from Paycom, Ramp, Power BI, and Salesforce, among others—in support of building a data-driven, impact-oriented organization.
Direct the organization's information security program, including risk assessments, policies, controls, and incident response, and participate in enterprise governance and risk management.
Help lead American Progress' responsible adoption of AI, establishing policies, tooling, and pilots and partnering with departmental leaders to move high-value use cases from idea to implementation.
Oversee an IT budget of approximately $3 million, including forecasting, vendor negotiations, and investment prioritization
Build, coach, and develop a high-performing, customer-centric IT team with a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications
Ten or more years of progressive experience in information technology, including at least five years in a senior leadership role with responsibility for both infrastructure and security.
Comfortable operating as a hands-on technical leader, not solely in a strategic or managerial capacity.
Demonstrated experience leading cloud migration or modernization of core systems in an organization of comparable scale.
Hands-on familiarity with current enterprise technology environments, including cloud platforms (Azure or AWS), identity (Entra ID or Okta), and modern productivity ecosystems (Microsoft 365).
Strong information security background, including risk management frameworks and incident response.
Experience owning and managing IT budgets, including forecasting, vendor negotiation, and cost management.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical concepts clearly to nontechnical audiences and senior leadership.
Track record of building, leading, and developing high-performing technical teams.
Experience in a nonprofit, policy, advocacy, or mission-driven organization preferred.
Experience leading the responsible adoption of AI tools and capabilities at the organizational level preferred.
Experience consolidating or integrating fragmented IT functions across previously separate teams or systems preferred.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field; equivalent professional experience will be considered. Relevant certifications such as ITIL, CISSP, CISM, or PMP are a plus. MBA preferred.
Commitment to American Progress’ mission and a record of using technology in service of organizational impact.
