Additional Pay Range Information
CDM Smith is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. This pay range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels for the geographic location assigned to the position. In addition to geographic location, a candidate’s salary is determined by several other factors including, but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, relevant work experience, skills, required certifications, and education/training.
Additional Compensation
All bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.

Job Description
What You Will Do
- With general direction, leads the planning, evaluation, and design of drinking water treatment facilities, water supply systems, transmission pipelines, pump stations, storage facilities, source water projects, and water distribution infrastructure to meet client objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Serves as a technical leader for drinking water projects, applying advanced engineering principles to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for municipal and regional water utilities.
- Reviews and approves engineering designs, technical reports, specifications, and construction documents for compliance with federal, state, and local drinking water regulations, including the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), EPA requirements, and applicable state regulatory standards.
- Ensures firm quality standards, engineering practices, and project delivery procedures are consistently applied across all assignments.
- Leads condition assessments, master planning studies, treatment evaluations, pilot testing programs, and site investigations to support capital improvement planning and infrastructure investment decisions.
- Performs and oversees water quality evaluations, treatment process modeling, hydraulic analyses, and regulatory compliance assessments related to emerging contaminants, treatment optimization, disinfection strategies, source water protection, and distribution system performance.
Provides technical expertise in areas such as:
- Conventional and advanced drinking water treatment processes
- Membrane filtration and advanced treatment technologies
- PFAS and emerging contaminant mitigation
- Disinfection and disinfection by-product control
- Water quality optimization and regulatory compliance
- Source water management and resilience planning
- Distribution system hydraulics and water age management
- Contributes to the firm's technical excellence initiatives through the development of white papers, technical guidance documents, presentations, and innovative design approaches.
- Authors and presents technical papers at industry conferences and submits publications to professional journals on drinking water treatment, water quality, and utility infrastructure topics.
- Collaborates with business development and client service teams to develop technical approaches, scopes of work, and cost estimates for proposals and statements of qualifications
- Leads client meetings and serves as a trusted advisor to municipal water utility leaders, helping clients address operational challenges, regulatory changes, asset management priorities, and long-term infrastructure planning needs.
- Represents the firm at industry conferences and professional organizations such as AWWA, ACE, WEFTEC, and state water associations, enhancing the firm's visibility and reputation within the drinking water market.
- Provides technical leadership, coaching, and professional development support to junior engineers and project staff.
- Mentors emerging drinking water professionals and fosters technical growth across the water practice.
- May serve as a technical lead, project manager, or task manager on complex drinking water projects and may supervise multidisciplinary project teams.
Skills & Abilities
- Expert Knowledge of computer assisted design and drafting (CADD) 3D and 4D software and practices.
- Expert Knowledge of engineer principles of design.
- Expert Knowledge of Microsoft business software (excel, word, etc.).
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Expert knowledge of federal, state and local regulations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
- Professional engineering (PE) license.
- 7 years of related experience.
- Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.
- Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
