About The Role

The Per Diem Medical Assistant (MA) plays a key front-line role in supporting high-quality patient care on an as-needed basis. Working under the supervision of licensed providers and in collaboration with clinical and administrative staff, this position performs both clinical and clerical duties to ensure efficient, patient-centered operations. The Per Diem MA provides flexible coverage based on organizational needs, maintaining a professional, compassionate presence while adapting to varying schedules, providers, and patient populations.


What You'll Do

  • Provide direct patient support, including escorting patients to exam rooms, obtaining and documenting vital signs, height, weight, and chief complaint in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Prepare exam rooms for patient visits, ensuring cleanliness, adequate supplies, and proper functioning of equipment
  • Assist providers with clinical procedures and examinations, following established protocols and infection control standards
  • Perform basic clinical tasks such as point-of-care testing, EKGs, specimen collection, and administration of medications or immunizations as authorized and in accordance with training and policy
  • Accurately document patient information, procedures, and treatments in the EMR, maintaining confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and organizational standards
  • Support patient flow by coordinating rooming, tracking provider schedules, and communicating effectively with clinical and front-desk staff
  • Provide patient education and instructions as directed by the provider, ensuring patients understand follow-up plans, referrals, and any home care guidance
  • Assist with scheduling, referrals, and coordination of follow-up appointments or services as needed
  • Maintain inventory of clinical supplies, restock exam rooms, and report equipment or supply issues promptly
  • Adhere to all infection prevention, safety, and quality protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment and safe handling of biohazard materials
  • Respond flexibly to changing daily needs, including covering various providers, clinics, or locations as assigned on a per diem basis
  • Participate in required trainings, competency assessments, and updates on clinical protocols and workflows


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program required
  • Current certification or registration as a Medical Assistant (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or equivalent), or eligibility and willingness to obtain certification within an organization-defined timeframe if required by state or employer
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to obtain prior to start date
  • Previous experience as a Medical Assistant in an outpatient clinic, physician office, or similar healthcare setting preferred
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and basic computer applications (email, scheduling, data entry)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with patients, families, and multidisciplinary staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and adapt to changing priorities and assignments
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to HIPAA and organizational policies
  • Ability to work on an hourly, per diem basis, including flexibility to accept shifts based on operational needs, which may include weekdays, evenings, or weekends depending on department requirements
  • Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the role, including standing for extended periods, walking, bending, and assisting with patient positioning or transfers as needed
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy in documentation, and commitment to quality and patient safety
