Job Summary

The Director of Accounting is responsible for overseeing the Property Accounting teams in the accounting for operating property financial results, including the accounting for real estate acquisitions and dispositions, as well as ensuring compliance with accounting rules and maintaining accounting policies and procedures. The Director of Accounting also plays a key role in driving process transformation and change management initiatives across the organization.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee Property Accounting team responsible for accounting activities related to Camden’s operating property financial results for both multifamily and retail lines of business, including team responsible for supporting utility bill pay and rebilling activities.
  • Own the monthly internal reporting process regarding operating property revenue and expense variances.
  • Manage and mentor four managers and staff while creating and promoting a supportive work environment.
  • Maintain and apply accounting policies in accordance with US GAAP, as well as ensure compliance with internal controls.
  • Identify topics, research accounting standards, and prepare technical memos to support new or changes to existing accounting policies and procedures. Bring a point of view rooted in technical accounting literature.
  • Lead the accounting processes for acquisitions and dispositions of real estate. Act as liaison with Real Estate Investments, Finance, and Legal in the preparation of related closing statements.
  • Collaborate with other groups, including but not limited to, Operations, Shared Services, Strategic Services, Treasury, Finance, and IT to continually improve processes, resolve issues, increase efficiency, and generally promote cross-functional success.
  • Lead change management efforts by clearly communicating objectives, aligning stakeholders, and ensuring successful adoption of new workflows and technologies across teams.

  • Support Financial Reporting in the preparation of data disclosed in Form 10-Q and 10-K SEC filings, as needed.
  • Contribute to budgeting process in area of operating property financial results.
  • Organize and manage responses to internal and external audits including quarterly and annual SOX and financial audits.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s and/or advanced degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Certified Public Accountant
  • 5-10 years of professional accounting experience required with at least 3+ years in a leadership position
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Technology savvy, including extensive experience with ERP systems (Oracle and/or SAP), high proficiency in Microsoft Excel, and knowledge of business intelligence tools (e.g., Microsoft Power BI, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team in a fast-paced and high transaction volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness
  • Strong analytical and multi-tasking skills
  • Detail oriented and highly organized

  • Position requires periodic travel by automobile to handle work-related activities
