About this role

Lifeguards play an essential role in maintaining a safe, clean, and enjoyable environment at Butler University’s Health and Recreation Complex Aquatic Center. Lifeguards provide vigilant surveillance of the pool area, enforce facility policies, and respond promptly and effectively to emergencies. This position also supports daily operations by assisting with water quality checks, maintaining organization on the pool deck, and delivering excellent customer service to all patrons. Lifeguards are expected to demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a strong commitment to safety while participating in ongoing training and skill development to ensure readiness and continuous improvement.

Work Schedule: 4 - 16 Hours Per Week

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Monitor the pool area to ensure patron safety

  • Enforce facility rules and respond to emergencies

  • Perform routine water quality tests and record keeping

  • Provide excellent customer service to all facility users

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the pool deck and lifeguard office

  • Participate in skill audits and regularly scheduled in-service staff trainings

 

Required Qualifications: 

 

  • Must be able to attend the Annual All Staff Training at the start of each Fall semester

  • Must successfully complete a background check

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or

  • If not already certified, successful applicants will be required to obtain an American Red Cross Lifeguard certification prior to employment by completing a prerequisite skills assessment and enrolling in a Butler University offered certification course. The cost of certification will be covered by Butler. In return for this investment, a minimum employment commitment of one semester is required.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

 

  • Experience working with diverse populations 

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills 

  • Previous lifeguard and/or competitive swimming experience preferred

  • Represent Butler University’s HRC Aquatics Center in a professional manner
