About this role

About BukuWarung

BukuWarung is building the digital and financial infrastructure for micro and small businesses across Southeast Asia. We serve millions of MSMEs through payments (BukuPay), credit (BukuModal), and financial tools — helping underbanked entrepreneurs grow faster and more securely.

The next phase of BukuWarung's growth is data-native: real-time decisioning, smarter underwriting, fraud prevention, and deeply personalized products — built for the 100M+ MSMEs across Southeast Asia who remain underserved by traditional financial institutions.

Why This Role Matters

Every payment, loan disbursement, device activation, and fraud check flows through backend services that must be fast, correct, and always on — because behind each transaction is a real merchant whose livelihood depends on it. As BukuWarung consolidates its channels and operations onto a unified data platform, the backend is where product logic, real-time decisioning, and data all meet.

As a Senior Data Engineer, you'll design and build the services and APIs that power BukuWarung's payments, credit, and merchant products — and that feed clean, reliable events into the data platform for fraud, credit, and analytics. This is a hands-on role for an engineer who wants to own meaningful systems in a high-scale fintech environment. You will:

  • Design and build scalable, reliable backend services and APIs across payments, lending, and merchant products

  • Integrate services with the unified data platform — emitting clean events and exposing data for real-time credit and fraud decisioning

  • Own services end to end: design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production reliability

  • Uphold the security, correctness, and compliance standards that regulated financial systems demand

Key Responsibilities

Service & API Development

  • Design, build, and maintain backend microservices and APIs that power BukuWarung's payments, credit, and merchant-facing products

  • Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code and participate actively in design and code reviews

  • Model data and design schemas for both transactional stores (e.g. PostgreSQL/MySQL) and caching/queuing layers (e.g. Redis, Kafka)

  • Build integrations with payment channels, lending flows, and third-party / partner APIs

Scale, Performance & Reliability

  • Engineer services for high throughput and low latency, with clear SLAs on availability and response time

  • Instrument services with logging, metrics, and alerting; participate in on-call and incident response

  • Diagnose and resolve production issues, performance bottlenecks, and reliability risks

  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and safe deployment practices

Data Platform & Decisioning Integration

  • Produce clean, well-structured events and data feeds into the unified data platform for fraud, credit, and analytics use cases

  • Build and expose APIs that serve real-time model outputs (credit scores, fraud signals) back into product flows

  • Partner with data and ML engineers so decisioning is fast, consistent, and observable in production

Security & Compliance

  • Follow secure-by-design practices for handling sensitive financial and personal data

  • Build to standards aligned with Bank Indonesia regulations and OJK compliance requirements

  • Ensure correctness and auditability in payments and lending flows, where errors carry direct financial consequences

Requirements

Must-Have

  • 4–6 years of professional backend development experience building production services at scale

  • Strong proficiency in at least one backend language (e.g. Go, Java, Python, or Node.js)

  • Solid experience designing and building RESTful and/or gRPC APIs and microservices

  • Strong grasp of relational databases and data modeling; comfortable with SQL query optimization

  • Experience with message queues / streaming (e.g. Kafka, RabbitMQ) and caching (e.g. Redis)

  • Hands-on with a cloud platform (AWS or GCP), containers (Docker), and CI/CD

  • Solid fundamentals in system design, testing, and writing reliable, maintainable code

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience in fintech — payments, lending, or fraud/risk systems

  • Familiarity with Bank Indonesia / OJK regulatory and security requirements

  • Experience integrating with real-time decisioning, ML model serving, or data pipelines

  • Exposure to Kubernetes, observability tooling, and event-driven architectures

  • Experience with high-scale, low-latency systems in Southeast Asia markets

Key Impact Areas — First 12 Months

  1. Owned Services — Independently own one or more production backend services, from design through reliable operation

  2. Scale & Reliability — Improve latency, throughput, and uptime of the systems you own, with measurable SLA gains

  3. Data Integration — Deliver clean event streams and decisioning APIs that connect product flows to the unified data platform

  4. Engineering Standards — Raise code quality and delivery practices through reviews, testing, and solid design
