Portfolio Analyst
About this role
Brook Green Supply (BGS) is a leading independent B2B gas and electricity supplier, delivering tailored energy supply and Net-Zero solutions to industrial and commercial consumers.
As part of the Portfolio Performance team, the Portfolio Analyst plays a central role in maximising realised portfolio profitability. The role goes beyond producing numbers. It explains performance, identifies the drivers of movement and recommends actions that improve future commercial decisions.
The team works alongside Portfolio Pricing and Portfolio Governance, acting as internal consultants to Sales, Pricing and Trading. You will validate pricing assumptions, flag portfolio risks and optimisation opportunities, and provide data-driven recommendations that support stronger portfolio performance.
This role suits an ambitious, flexible and commercially curious analyst who wants to build deep expertise across portfolio performance, wholesale markets, hedging, forecasting, energy operations and commercial decision-making.
Essential Functions of the Job:
- Produce monthly portfolio profitability breakdowns by customer, product, channel, broker, industry, contract type, account manager, region and size, and identify the root causes of outliers.
- Develop hedge MtM and volume reporting into clear performance explanation, including over or under hedging, forecast error cost and the customers or sectors driving inefficiency.
- Identify portfolio optimisation opportunities, including over or under-consuming customers, incorrect AQs, contracts requiring rebasing and contract clauses that create cost or add customer value.
- Maintain a commercial data layer for each contract, covering commercial, performance and risk attributes.
- Produce a monthly, evidence-based recommendations paper for management.
- Track forecast accuracy across pricing, volume, hedge and demand.
- Own and update the commercial KPI dashboard, covering financial performance, commercial mix and risk.
- Produce early warning reports to flag issues before they crystallise, including AQ breaches, deteriorating margin positions and hedge exposure.
- Validate AI-generated forecasts and recommendations, and track their accuracy against realised outcomes.
- Back-test pricing assumptions, including load factors, shaping premium and risk premium, against realised performance.
- Write ad hoc commercial insight papers that explain key performance movements and recommended actions.
- Complete ad hoc tasks as required by management.
Skills & Experience Required:
- Degree-level education in a numerical subject, with a STEM degree desirable.
- Previous experience in an analytical, commercial or portfolio-focused role.
- Experience working with large, structured data sets and building dashboards or reporting tools.
- Strong analytical skills, with natural curiosity for the reasons behind performance movements.
- Excellent attention to detail and pride in producing accurate, well-supported analysis.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to turn analysis into actionable recommendations.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Knowledge of SQL Server is desirable, with interest in developing SQL capability further.
- Experience in the electricity or gas industry is an advantage, particularly portfolio profitability, hedging, forecasting or pricing.
- Able to work independently or as part of a team, prioritising workload effectively with minimal supervision.
- Proactive problem-solver who takes ownership, creates solutions and improves ways of working.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment and responding to changing business needs.
- Enthusiastic about learning new subjects and developing knowledge across wholesale markets, non-commodities, regulatory frameworks, settlements, billing and compliance.
