Senior Electrical Engineer

Long Beach · On-site

About this role

Our Mission Is Simple: Democratize Access To Clean Energy

Welcome to BlueCore Energy! We are on a relentless mission to democratize access to clean energy. By designing and building advanced floating Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs) on barges right here in Long Beach, CA, we are bringing scalable, clean, and reliable power to the world. Joining our team means getting in on the ground floor of a revolution in marine small modular reactors (SMRs). If you are passionate, driven, and ready to tackle some of the most exciting challenges of our time, we want you on our team!

Our Values

  • Humility — We hold strong opinions loosely, say "I don't know," ask for help early, and let the best idea win regardless of who it came from.

  • Inclusivity — The best engineering comes from many perspectives. We build a team where everyone is heard, and we mean it.

  • Pragmatism — We solve the real problem in front of us, reuse what already works, and value a tested answer over an elegant one.

About the Role

As one of our first engineers, you'll work across power, instrumentation, and control systems to make our reactor real. From instrumentation, to the power generation, distribution, and storage systems, and networking and computing, you'll work hands-on with all of it in a fast-paced environment. You'll decide what to buy and what to build to lower cost, improve reliability and performance, and shorten production and deployment timelines.

Responsibilities

  • Own electrical systems from concept through commissioning.

  • Perform design trades, develop requirements, and bring up and validate hardware.

  • Develop schematics, wiring diagrams, and data acquisition systems.

  • Collaborate with the Mechanical, Software, Core Design, and Quality teams to design the reactor.

  • Work with the Licensing team regarding the design basis, including fail-safe architecture, design diversity, and redundancy.

  • Support the hazard analysis process by identifying failure modes, safe states, and mitigations.

  • Support test activities including HITL, validation testing, and integration campaigns.

  • Develop new hardware and processes to improve safety and reliability, enhance existing capabilities, bring new capabilities online, reduce cost, and shrink manufacturing time.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • A degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or a related discipline.

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience activating, building, and troubleshooting complex electronic systems.

  • Familiar with fault-tolerant, safety-critical, and/or autonomous systems.

  • Hands-on experience with multiple electrical domains: instrumentation, sensing, power systems, controls, networking, computing, data acquisition, etc.

  • Proficient with lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, signal generators).

  • Able to think through possible failure modes and safe states.

  • Comfortable reasoning from first principles.

  • Works independently and drives tasks to completion with minimal direction.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience with kV level voltage and MW level power systems.

  • Experience designing to nuclear, maritime, or other safety-critical standards.

  • Proficiency with electrical design, simulation, and/or PCB layout tools.
