The Associate Underwriter supports Underwriters in the evaluation, selection, and servicing of business while developing the technical expertise required for independent underwriting. This role underwrites new and renewal business, applies rating and risk assessment principles, and ensures compliance with company guidelines and procedures. The core function of this role centers on building underwriting capability, managing account activity, and progressively taking on greater ownership of risk evaluation and execution.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Underwrite new and renewal business, including evaluating risk, conducting rating, and determining appropriate placement within established guidelines   

  • Review submissions, inspection reports, and policy details to ensure accuracy and alignment with underwriting and risk expectations   

  • Manage account servicing activities, including endorsements, audits, cancellations, and policy changes while ensuring compliance with company standards   

  • Monitor assigned accounts to ensure adherence to company policies, procedures, and underwriting guidelines   

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients and internal partners while supporting production and business growth objectives   

  • Provide guidance and direction to underwriting support staff, including reviewing work and ensuring quality and accuracy of output 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent insurance-related experience preferred 

  • Experience within wholesale insurance, including underwriting, rating, or account servicing responsibilities 

  • Experience expectations increase across the career path, with progression toward greater underwriting authority and independent decision-making 

 

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 

  • Current state-specific insurance license preferred. Additional professional designations may be pursued to support technical development and career progression. 

 

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS 

  • Strong understanding of insurance products, underwriting principles, and risk evaluation techniques 

  • Ability to analyze policy structures, inspection reports, and exposure data to inform underwriting decisions 

  • Knowledge of rating methodologies and market placement strategies
